With so many big international acts rolling into Toronto to play NXNE, it's easy for great Canadian acts to get lost in the crowd. We're here to help. Below, 10 Canadian acts that you cannot miss.
These Sherbrooke, Quebec-based rockers won Searchlight this year with their mix of punk, new wave and straight up rock 'n' roll, and we couldn’t be more excited to see them do their thing live. Full disclosure: CBC Music is sponsoring this event. That’s how much we like them.
NXNE Hub: Friday, June 19, 9 p.m.
Orange O'Clock, "Can't Fight the Feeling"
Jazz Cartier
This Toronto rapper’s excellent debut album, Marauding in Paradise, was longlisted for the Polaris Prize. With an opening spot for one of the most hyped acts to play NXNE, Rae Sremmurd, we can only expect his star to rise even more. Get familiar now before he’s on to bigger venues.
Danforth Music Hall: Saturday, June 20, 9 p.m.
The Toronto-based duo have been doing the Delta blues rock thing for a while now, and their groovy, throwback vibe has won them a pretty loyal following on Radio 3. They’ll also be playing the CBC Music sponsored night at the Hub, along with Ben Caplan, Jane’s Party and more. (Click here for full details).
NXNE Hub: Friday, June 19, 1 a.m.
Catl, "Gold Tooth Shine"
Bizzarh
This Toronto group blends synth-pop, disco, R&B and hip-hop, creating a sound that is somehow both laid-back and upbeat. They’re also opening for Willow Smith, so expect a big (and young) crowd.
Danforth Music Hall: Thursday, June 18, 8 p.m.
Raz Fresco
We’re big fans of the young Raz Fresco. So much that we brought him down to New York to work with legendary producer Pete Rock for our Rock the Mic series. With a new mixtape, Pablo/Frescobar, due any day now, this will be your chance to hear new material first hand.
Drake Hotel Underground: Thursday, June 18, 10 p.m.
Truth be told, NXNE made a great call subbing in Shad to play the free, closing-night concert. We’d take him over Action Bronson any day.
Yonge-Dundas Square: Sunday, June 21, 9 p.m.
Shad, "Y'all Know Me"
This punk rock band from Toronto is loud. Really loud. You get that from their albums, but it’s contained. You really need to see what happens when they fully unload.
Adelaide Hall: Saturday, June 20, 11 p.m.
Greys, "Use Your Delusion"
Sets from this Montreal electronic artist are so personal and affecting that he’s been known to make his audience members cry. If you’re looking for a cathartic experience, this is your best bet. You’ve been warned.
Berkeley Church: Thursday, June 18, 9 p.m.
Majical Cloudz, "Childhood's End"
Paper Bag Records, Paper 100
To celebrate their 100th album release, beloved Toronto label Paper Bag is calling in all the favours and presenting a night of music with members of the Sam Roberts Band, Nils Edenloff from the Rural Alberta Advantage, Woodhands, The Acorn, PS I Love You, Laura Barrett, Cuff the Duke and a whole lot more. Don’t miss this one.
Lee’s Palace: Thursday, June 18, 8 p.m.
When is the last time you were able to see power-pop legends the New Pornographers play a free show in the middle of downtown Toronto? Never, right? To sweeten the deal, Best Coast is their opening act. See you there.
Yonge-Dundas Square: Saturday, June 20, 9 p.m.
New Pornographers, "Brill Bruisers"
