It was a big, big live music weekend with Osheaga, OVO Fest and SappyFest all taking place at the same time, while Lollapalooza happened across the border in Chicago. Here's some of what happened.
It was, by all accounts, a weekend of wall-to-wall stellar performances at Parc Jean Drapeau, but apparently it was Lorde who won the weekend by taking the massive stage with a minimalist, spooky goth-inspired set. (Heads up, there is some NSFW language in this video.)
If you were wondering if Torontonians were burned out on their favourite rapping son yet, the answer from this year's OVO Fest was a resounding no. Every singing number was a sing-a-long, every rap song was a dance party, and every time Aubrey Graham spoke, the crowd screamed like the building was on fire. We reviewed the whole thing, but if you don't feel like reading that, here's the bit where he brought out Usher and everyone lost their minds. (Warning, this video also contains some swears.)
The Constantines rocked Sappyfest
Sackville, New Brunswick's staunchly independent Sappyfest has an almost cult-like following among Canadian indie rock enthusiasts, and according to our good friends at Exclaim!, this year's line-up went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to being awesome. That said, the Constantines were the standouts of the fest, packing the festival's biggest venue and causing the audience to freak out with joy.
Malia Obama went to Lollapalooza
When you Google "Lollapalooza" right now, you get a handful of stories about bands and a whole lot of excitement from people who met the First Teen while she was watching hometown hero Chance the Rapper. We can only imagine the number of panicked Secret Service agents who were also in attendance at Chicago's Grant Park.
