Welcome back, we hope your weekend left you feeling recharged. Here's what happened in live music while you were out watching the supermoon.
Lil Wayne and Drake have a tour app
First of all, let's just start with the fact that Drake and Lil Wayne's Street Fighter-themed tour makes us incredibly happy. That game was the best.
In keeping with the theme, the tour also has its own app for Android and iOS. Users can download the app, then "button mash" to support the rapper of their choice. The results from the app will determine both who goes onstage first, and which MC "won the show."
Billy Corgan gives fans a chance to help choose his set list
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan will be playing an acoustic solo set in Highland Park, Ill., at the end of this month, and to show he's a man of the people, he's letting people pick his setlist — sort of.
The winner of the "Yes, It's My Billy Corgan Dream Set List Competition For Ravinia/2014!" contest — yeah, that's really what it's called — will get to meet Corgan before the show, and while he won't actually use their set list, he will probably play some of it.
He wants 20 songs, spanning his entire career, not leaning too heavily on any one era. If you're interested, the contest runs until Aug. 14.
Steve Aoki defends throwing cake at fans
If you're familiar with the work of EDM producer/DJ Steve Aoki, then you probably know that the two highlights of every Aoki performance are when he crowdsurfs in a raft, and when he throws cake at an audience member. In a recent Daily Beast column, he goes to great pains to defend his dessert-tossing ways"
"In the end, all these props are tools of expression. When the average person sees someone getting caked they probably think 'Wow, that looks horrible' or, 'That is so rude and uncalled for. How could you cake your fans that love you? That is just mean and cruel.' I always do my best to try and avoid anyone that does not want the cake. The way I pick who gets caked is generally by who shows me the most energy and is screaming for it. The cake is about celebration. It’s something to be experienced in person. When you see fans begging to be caked and how happy they are afterwards, it’s like scoring a touchdown. The whole place erupts and joins in that happiness."
Bro, whatever, you like throwing cake and your audiences mostly like getting cake on them. You didn't need to write a book on it.
(Also, did everyone but us know Aoki's sister is model/actress Devon Aoki?)
Arcade Fire covered 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
As you know by now, Arcade Fire have been doing a locally relevant cover at every stop on their current tour. When they played a gig in Washington state on Friday, they kept it up by using "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as an intro to "Rococo." Because what else were they going to cover? Sir Mix-a-Lot? (Actually, that would have been amazing.)
