Manchester-based DJ/producer Lone has remained fairly active since the release of his last album, 2012's solid Galaxy Garden. Between dropping the excellent "Airglow Fires" b/w "Begin to Begin" single (which offered one of 2013's best songs), sharing random freebies, and doing a couple of remixes here and there, the artist born Matt Cutler has never been far from the XLR8R news feed. But he's now primed to return in a much bigger way, as details of Lone's next full-length record for R&S have found their way online.

We are fast approaching the one-year mark since Machinedrum (pictured above) released his XLR8R Pick'd "Eyesdontlie" single, one of our favorite tracks of 2013. And yet new versions of the moody, drum-focused song are still being released, the latest of which is a dubby remix from longstanding UK producers Adrian Sherwood and Pinch.

San Francisco is repping hard on this download. Pulled from SF label Voltaire's VIARE 12" compilation (out today, artwork above), longtime Bay Area producer The Beat Broker takes on the synth-obsessed "Virgo Cluster" production from NYC-via-SF resident Jonas Reinhardt. In the hands of its remixer, "Virgo Cluster" almost doubles in length, its galactic synth streaks and delay-washed guitar strums stretched out to ensure an even more bountiful soundscape—which is then wrapped around a simple disco beat, and enhanced by just the right push of additional low-end strength. "Virgo Cluster (The Beat Broker Remix)" appears alongside Jonas Reinhardt's original track on VIARE, in addition to other productions from Roche, Timothy J. Fairplay, and Plaza—whose promo mix in celebration of the 12"s release can be streamed and downloaded after the jump. (An extra promo mix from Voltaire label boss Hotthobo can also be grabbed here.)

Mule Musiq is often overlooked when people discuss their favorite labels, but the long-standing Japanese imprint continues to deliver one quality release after another. Even after nearly a decade of doing business, Mule Musiq's catalog is just about flawless, and the label will soon be making another top-shelf addition to its discography, the third installment of its ambient Enjoy the Silence compilation series.

As it does every year, the SXSW music festival and conference brought just about every living artist imaginable to perform in Austin earlier this month, and that includes excellent sets from some of XLR8R's favorite DJs and producers. Four Tet's session on Boiler Room was among the litany of sights and sounds taking over the Texan city that week, and as always happens with those live-streaming events, video of the party has now appeared online.

The history of house music is littered with iconic characters, but the influence of Frankie Knuckles can't be understated. Often referred to as "The Godfather of House Music," the Bronx native got his DJ start in New York City alongside fellow legend Larry Levan, but it was only after he relocated to Chicago that he truly made his biggest impact. Serving as a resident at early house hotspots like the Warehouse and later at his own club, The Power Plant, Knuckles played an instrumental role in growing house from a small scene into a global movement. Over time, he also extended his talents into the production world, and eventually became one of house music's most in-demand remixers. Now, after more than 35 years in the game, Knuckles remains active, continuing to turn out both remixes and original tracks and regularly touring the globe. On June 14, he'll be performing for Love Fever at London's Found Festival, sharing the stage with Moodymann, Bicep, San Soda, and more, and the festival's organizers inquired if XLR8R would be interested in having Knuckles contribute to our podcast series. Given his pedigree, it didn't take long for us to say "yes."

With the ambitious goal of "breaking barriers and pushing the envelope for soul music" in mind, Lumumba is set to drop its Tantalum EP via French outpost B.YRSLF Division, sharing EP cut "Coltan" ahead of its release next week. Opening with a distorted yelp, the peculiar production incorporates deconstructed elements of UK dance music: A low-growling vocal build is accentuated by subdued arpeggiations and a slow clap pattern, and melting synths create a somewhat uneasy feeling as they quickly shift between high-pitched chords and a slow-decaying whimper. Before the rest of Lumumba's unique Tantalum EP arrives on April 1, an early preview of its seven tracks can be found after the jump.
