100 Word Review: Fusk - Super Kasper

Label: WhyPlayJazz

Released: March 2013

Super Kasper is the second release from the Danish/German improvisational quartet FUSK led by drummer Kasper Tom Christiansen. The instrumentation consists of tenor sax, bass clarinet, bass and drums and the eleven tracks featured are all first take recordings with three being complete improvisations. The music is imaginative and challenging, but at the same time energetic and entertaining. A number of the tunes feature some great interplay between the tenor sax and bass clarinet with the melodies sometimes quirky, sometimes catchy. Super Kasper is an intriguing listen that swings like a jazz album should, but also steps outside the box.
