Sean Tyas is one of the premiere names in trance music. His undoubtedly unique style and flare is what sets him apart from everyone else in the trance music scene. We caught up with Sean Tyas last year at Nocturnal Wonderland and had an interview for the ages, at one point talking about zombie dreams. But with Sean having so much going on with brand new music, the reworking of his Tytanium Sessions, and a constant tour schedule, we had to sit down to get more in depth with him. We have a bunch of exclusives in this interview including brand new collaborations he is working on, a new remix he has created featuring a member of a rock band on vocals, as well as what Sean must do anytime he comes back to the states. What is it? You are just going to have to read to find out. Q: How is 2013 treating you? So far it has been an interesting year for me. About 2 months ago, the most important thing for me was and my studio work, was changing it from a one hour weekly show to a 2-hour monthly one. When it came to my productions, it slowed me down. The show was going great though. Each week, I tried to refine all the settings on my mic and everything, just so that the show would always get a little better sounding. It was just drilling me though, so at some point I just decided I am going to switch the show to a 2-hour monthly show. With it, I am able to have guests on the show, and I have found a lot more time to be producing. The production level and the production speed is kind of where it was at 4-years ago, where I was just pushing stuff out like the speed of light.Q: So we can expect a lot more productions from you here in-the-near future? A lot more productions. Not just more solo stuff either. I have plenty of collaborations, a lot more vocal tracks, just a lot more interesting stuff. I am able to get back to the things that I am known for. More with the higher BPM sound.Q: I know with the last episode of Tytanium Sessions, you had 2 guest mixes: a mix from Noah Neiman, and a mix from Photographer. Do you plan on doing all your episodes like this? Exactly. I want to do 2 guest mixes every show. With 2 hours to play with I can fit it and I like the 2 guests, because it sets up an opening and closing DJ slot. I loved the last episode. I look at the tracklist and it was just perfect. This is kind of the format I am wanting to go with. If I have to do 1 guest, I will, but I want to try to do at least 2 every episode.Q: Who will you have coming on for the next episode? The next episode will feature Eximinds opening it up, and Jordan Suckley closing it out. So that should be really cool. We got a guy coming from the trance 2.0 side to open it up, and then a guy who is going to close it out with the banging 140. This is the formula that I am into and that seems to be working really well for the show. That is as far as I plan though. I wont know who will be in October till probably mid-September. Q: You were saying that you were going to come back into the higher side of trance. What direction are going to go in? The more psy-trance style or the more harder, uplifting sound? I am not really psy-trance. That is not my style. I just love trance music. If it is dirty and melodic, I love it. If it is going to rip people's faces off, I love it. If it Is psy-trance, then joke is on me.Q: Who are some of your absolute favorite producers right now? I think Darren Porter and Photographer are 2 of my absolute favorites. Adam Ellis and Indecent Noise are 2 guys who are getting an enormous amount of attention in my opinion. I have always been a fan of, in my opinion the trance prince, Giuseppe Ottaviani. He in my opinion is really good all around. He has had a consistent sound for all these years, and he has never, ever stepped outside of his comfort zone.Q: Going back to what you were saying before, about people following the same template and losing the music, what do you think of the trance artists, who used to be super melodic, but now are going super big with this bassy progressive/electro house sound? The genre lines are getting trampled. I think categorizing an artists and their music is a bad thing, but you have to do it just for the fact-of-the-matter that when people want to go shopping for music, they don't go to iTunes, they go to Beatport, because it is meticulously categorized. What is being torn apart, is this commercial house stuff that is infecting every other genre. It gets into people's mind thinking, "Oh, that must be what electro is, and this must be what progressive is. This is how trance sounds." This "EDM" is just invading everybody and making people clueless to what the genre really is. Real electro is disgustingly dirty stuff, but it's hard. People who think that artists like W&W are electro are just wrong.Q: Lets talk about Tytanium 200. With it, you did a massive string of shows as well as released a mix compilation. Tell us about some of the shows you performed for the tour? The shows were really cool. We milked it for about a month and a half of shows. Highlights include of course New York, my hometown, then over to Zouk in Singapore. Just an insane club, I think maybe my favorite club in all of Asia. I kicked it off with one in Holland, did one over in Czech Republic. Good spots for trance music. It was a fun thing to throw together, but also hectic when putting together the lineups. You want to find people whose tour schedules line up correctly. It was a lot of fun, but I am glad the show is monthly now, because it is going to be a long time before 300.Q: How did you go about bringing these artists for each show? These were all guys who I have played with before and can have a laugh with while playing together. With Leon [Boiler] we always have a great time. I like Alex M.O.R.P.H. These are just good guys to be up there and have a laugh with.Q: With the Tytaniun Sessions 200 Mix Compilation, you had 17-tracks filling up the mix compilation. How did you go about choosing which tracks to feature? The labels that want to partake in stuff like that, you first send out a request telling them what you are putting together, then they send huge zip files of their summer release schedules and fall release schedules. Then, it is like you are listening to demos, except each track is really, really good.Q: So these were the top-of-the-top for you? They were the ones that worked best for me and with each other. The whole compilation has to flow smoothly and the tracks have to be able to go in and out of each other. There were a couple times that I had to change the tracklist just because the mix wasn't working out with some tracks. For a CD, it has to be pristine and polished. It just can't be a live set where you can work stuff out, and if there is a small imperfection, people get that. On a CD, you can't do that though.Q: Was there one track in the mix that when you listened to it, you said, I have to have this? Oh, definitely. Inertia's track 'The Chamber', the Liam Wilson remix. I have been playing for the last 2 months in my club sets, and I am happy to feature it on here before it is even released.Q: Want to get into some music with you. You said you have plenty releases and collaborations coming out. One of those being with Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. How did that come about? I wouldn't really say I am working with him. I am remixing this guy, Alex Kunnari out of Finland. He did a track with Joel. It is called 'City of Sin'. The first package already went out. The original is a little electro-ish. Tom Falls did a more melodic house remix of it. Then, I was just listening to it, and got in contact with Alex Kunnari. Alex is the guy who throws the parties that I have been playing at in Ibiza this year and last year. So, I was at his place in Ibiza, and I told him, "You have to give me the chance to remix this." I wanted to give the track a little edgier, harder guitar feel to it. I loved this guys chorus and I thought it was just absolutely amazing. I heard the guy wrote the track in 45 minutes. That is talent. How many vocalist does any DJ know that can write a track in 45 minutes?Q: After doing the remix, do you think you would want to work with Joel Madden more in the future? Oh, absolutely! I am waiting to hear the response about the track. I hope he really likes, because I want to work with him again.Q: I know that you and Fisher have been working very closely together. What can you tell me about that venture? We met about 6 months ago, and all online. We are currently working on her solo stuff right now, which is sounding incredible. At my performance at Avalon Hollywood, she did a 3-track set with me. I am thrilled that we are working together. It is a lot of work, but Fisher is just really honed on it, and she is superbly talented.Q: What other collaborations do you have in the works right now? Well, I hope I don't jinx it, but I just started one collaboration with Paul van Dyk that I am super stoked for. Doing one with Photographer as well. Just finished one with Noah Neiman, it will also be featuring the vocals of Fischer. Obviously, the track 'Beat Boutique' came out this week with RAM, that was another collaboration. Me and Darren Porter are just finishing up our collaboration right now. That is called 'Solstice'. Definitely, plenty of work with other people. I think I am about to start work on another collaboration next week, but we really haven't discussed the details. It is going to be a ridiculous year in the studio. Q: Do you have any gigs that you are really looking forward to getting back to? I am really looking forward to Ruby Skye. I love San Francisco. It has been a while since I have been over there. I am going to Texas for Something Wicked Festival put on by Disco Donnie, so that should be an absolute sick party. As far as that goes, I am looking forward to getting back to D.C., New York City, and I have my first show in Charlotte this year. So really, my most anticipated gigs are in the states. I love coming back there because it feels like a homecoming to me.Q: Whenever you come back to the states, is there one thing that you need to do? I usually like to go out and eat many, many ribs and red meat meals. In Switzerland, red meat is brutally expensive. So I try to go to a place with just fat, BBQ ribs.Luckily Charlotte has some amazing BBQ down there. I would expect nothing less from the South though. It is North Carolina though. Is North Carolina part of the South?I lived in Tennessee for 4 years. It is definitely part of the South. Has some amazing BBQ, so you will definitely enjoy yourself. You are making me hungry. I am going to have to have a second dinner.Well, I just woke up so I am going to get some breakfast. Ribs? (laughs)Q: I think that ribs can work. What do you want to say to your fans about the rest of the year and your upcoming stuff? Just stay alert and keep your eyes peeled. You guys over in the states, I am looking forward to getting back to you, or to see you for the first time. Watch my Facebook page, because whenever there is news I always put it on up. Most importantly, thanks for reading this interview. I hope that, it was more interesting than me talking about my zombie dreams like last time. |

When Andy Duguid released his first artist album, Believe, in 2008, he was defined by his pristine sound and technical skill by underground and established artists alike. Quickly, the name Andy Duguid was on the lips of everyone in the trance music scene. 5 years have gone by. Now, Andy Duguid is back after many years and many late night studio hours getting everything as close to perfect as possible with his follow up album. On The Edge is the name of the newest release, set for the public on September 16th off Black Hole Recordings. With DJ Mag dubbing him “the martinet of ‘doin’-it-different” last month, Andy Duguid had to make sure that he came prepared for an yearning of music that will once again separate him from the social pack. That is exactly what he was able to accomplish. Andy has created 12-tracks. Not just 12-tracks that he put together just because, but 12-tracks that stand out on their very own. 12 works of art that can take you to a different place, a different time, a different state of mind. Whether it is with the string-theory and vocal harmonized track ‘On The Edge‘ with its precise drums & percussion, or with the tougher side of trance with ‘I Want To Believe‘, letting the drums pound overtly while Shannon Hurley vocals cut deep like a knife, each track offers a brand new experience. Featuring some of the worlds best trance vocalists, Andy Duguid enlisted the help of such illustrious maidens of their craft with Julie Thompson, Seri, Audrey Gallagher, Lizzie Curious and more. My thought process before heading to the studio on day one of makingthis album was simple. Don’t rush it. Be inspired. And be me. I was coming off the back of my fair share of tragedy so it was certain emotion would play a major role in its making. Every track on this album has it’s own backstory and I think every story deserves the perfect soundtrack. – Andy DuguidWith Mixmag labeling it as their October Album of the Month, One The Edge is sure to find its way into every trance lovers speakers and into its place as something special that occurred in the trance music scene. Tracklist1. On The Edge (6:53)2. Skin & Bones (featuring Julie Thompson) (6:20) 3. When You’re With Me (featuring Hannah Ray) (6:57) 4. Paradise (Richard’s Theme) (6:07) 5.
