FACT Magazine Frank Ocean will release his new album this Friday @ Musique Non Stop

Frank Ocean’s long-awaited sophomore full-length Boys Don’t Cry will be released this Friday, August 5 exclusively through Apple Music. Their source tells them that the album should also come with a “major video” and a printed publication of the same name that will be distributed in Apple stores.
Earlier today, Ocean released a mysterious video project he created with Francisco Soriano with stereo art by Tom Sachs. Not so mysterious anymore!

Ketamine-themed musical to debut in Brooklyn later this month
Posted: 01 Aug 2016 01:39 PM PDT
Yes, really.
Bushwick, Brooklyn art space and night club House of Yes is slated to debut “an immersive, participatory, psychoactive and dissociative spectacle” called Ketamine: The Musical later this month.
The event takes place August 17-19 (D∆WN is playing there the night before, to give you an idea that the place is not completely daft) and stars not only its hired cast, but the entire audience. It’s a seated event “because obviously you can’t stand on Ketamine” and only runs for just over an hour – but “feels like an eternity (the fun and scary kind).”
There are only tickets available for the show on the 19th – and you can grab them here – and they come in “Tranquilized” (VIP) and “Mildly Swervy” (general admission). Sure!

West chats about IKEA and why ‘Fade’ is the next single off of The Life Of Pablo.
Earlier today we previewed Annie Mac’s in-depth Q&A with Kanye West where he revealed that his Glasto 2015 flub put him in a “depressed state.” Now you can hear him talk about the festival, his feelings for Justin “Bon Iver” Vernon (“I love Justin like Kanye loves Kanye”) and more, in full.
He also addresses how Europe respects musicians most as artists, whereas the States treats them more like tabloid headlines, as well as how much he’d like to work with IKEA: “Yo Ikea, allow Kanye to create, allow him to make this thing because you know what, I want a bed that he makes, I want a chair that he makes.”
Kanye’s bid for United States presidency is not off the table, either: “When I talk about the idea of being president, I’m not saying I have any political views. I just have a view on humanity, on people, on the truth. We are numb, we’re numb to 500 kids getting killed in Chicago a year, we’re numb to the fact that it was seven police shootings in the beginning of July. If there is anything that I can do with my time and my day, to somehow make a difference while I’m alive I’m going to try to do it.”

Musicians gathered in Italy to pay tribute to the late icon.
Rockin’ 1000, a volunteer-based thousand-member rock band, performed David Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’ at Orogel Stadium in Cesena, Italy over the weekend. It was part of a larger concert that was assembled after a video of Rockin’ 1000 performing ‘Learn to Fly’ by Foo Fighters in 2015 went viral.
Several hundred singers, guitarists, bass players and drummers congregated for the performance. Bagpipe-players, keyboardists and more were on board, as well.

So wrong it’s right.
The humble glitch – it sounds like it should be easy to make, but there’s more to it than you might think. Thankfully, there’s a new synthesizer module that should make the process somewhat simpler, and fittingly, it all started with a mistake.
IDM label Detroit Underground has teamed up with Beijing-based hacker and music producer Meng Qi (aka menqimusic) to create the Circuit-Bent Digital Waveguide™, or the DU-KRPLS. From the outside it looks not unlike one of MakeNoise’s modules, but inside’s where things get interesting.

The module has two modes, the regular mode uses “Karplus–Strong string synthesis” to emulate the sound of a plucked string – a particularly useful sound if you’re desperate to make music like late-90s Autechre. Flip a switch and things get really bizarre: the “circuit-bent” mode uses broken code to create glitches and noise that… err… also sounds like late-90s Autechre. Which is obviously a good thing.
You can grip the Eurorack module now from the Detroit Underground site for the modest price of $120. [via CDM]

Amy’s Place will help women with recovery struggles after quitting substance abuse.
The Guardian reports that the Amy Winehouse Foundation have opened Amy’s Place, a 16-person home for women in recovery for drugs and alcohol addiction. The facility has “12 self-contained apartments,” four of which will have two beds. The aim of the home is to help women who have quit drugs or alcohol learn how to re-ingratiate themselves into regular life and to have a support system in place to avoid relapsing.
Dominic Ruffy, the special project director at the Amy Winehouse Foundation who has, himself, been in recovery tells The Guardian: “There are about six women-only rehabs, and beyond that, there's an even greater paucity of women-specific recovery housing beds… There is only one other women-only recovery house in London and it's only a four-bed with a six-month waiting list… Our experience shows if you give people an extended period of time post-traditional rehabilitation treatment, you will improve the percentage of people who stay clean [in the] long term. We have a saying in recovery that the drink and drugs aren't our problem, it's living life clean and sober.”
Amy’s Place will use what is called a “co-production model,” which gives its residents shared control over their recovery. To develop the program, women who stayed at London’s Hope House were consulted about what a perfect facility would look like. For Amy’s Place, that includes things like yoga and employability workshops.
Winehouse died five years ago this past July from an accidental alcohol poisoning. The Amy Winehouse Foundation was set up to help women with similar substance abuse issues.

A true classic returns.
Konami’s platforming classic Castlevania originally came out in 1986, released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System. A year later, it was released on the NES, and its popularity grew from there. The game has received a litany of sequels and countless accolades, and its soundtrack, by Kinuyo Yamashita and Satoe Terashima, is a crucial part of its appeal – when FACT rounded up the top five NES soundtracks, including Castlevania was a no-brainer.
It’s hardly surprising then that the game is having its soundtrack repackaged on vinyl – a bootleg vinyl version actually appeared last year and sold out immediately, causing Discogs prices to surge.
Mondo announced that it was planning to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary by issuing the classic soundtracks back in April, and now those plans have been solidified. The Austin-based company has five albums planned in the series, starting with the original Castlevania.
Castlevania
Castlevania – Original Video Game Soundtrack will be released on 10″ “heavy weight grey vinyl with black & white splatter” and pressed at 45rpm, so the quality is sure to be a little better than the bootleg. It features all 12 background music tracks from the game and spiffy new artwork from Becky Cloonan. It will go on sale via Mondo’s site on Wednesday August 3.
Castlevania
The remaining reissues will be the soundtracks to NES games Simon’s Quest and Dracula’s Curse, the Super Nintendo classic Super Castlevania IV and the jewel in the series’ crown, acclaimed Playstation game Symphony of the Night. We can’t wait.

Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase is released next month.
Kaleidoscopic techno producer Karen Gwyer is to release a three-track EP on UK label Don’t Be Afraid in September.
Described by the label as “an exercise in futurist dancefloor electronics”, the Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase 12″ follows Gwyer’s appearance on a split EP for the label alongside Lily, Dukwa and Raven Cry in May.
Don’t Be Afraid calls the title track as the “obvious choice for DJs”, but ‘Meoises Gametes’ streaming below sees Gwyer crafting a slower, more industrial sound.

The record is released on September 2 on 12″ and digital formats. It comes as part of a busy year for Gwyer, who also appeared on a spilt 12″ with Beatrice Dillon for the Alien Jams label in May.

GILA takes hip-hop to the warehouse.
If you’re a regular FACT reader you may have come across Gorgeous Children, the experimental rap act responsible for one of our favorite mixtapes of 2013 – the pitch-black, Blade Runner-influenced ICE.
Now, Gorgeous Children’s production half, GILA (aka Gila Monsta), has announced his debut physical release, GENKIDAMA, which is set for release via UK indie titan XL on August 5 on vinyl, with digital coming later on August 12.
The EP’s lead track 'Tuff Whisper' showcases GILA’s unique sound, which fuses the low-end boom of Atlanta rap with the gloomy backdrop of industrial music, resulting in a sound that’s effortlessly cinematic. Jason Voltaire directed the track’s visual accompaniment, which blends lo-fi, crumbling VHS belches with GILA’s haunting pads and crumbling beats.
You can pre-order GENKIDAMA from XL now.

NI’s biggest software collection yet is released in September.
Native Instruments has announced the eleventh version of its Komplete software collection, which comes with an all-new sample-based synthesizer called Form.
As with previous versions, Komplete 11 bundles up most of NI’s most popular instruments and effects at a reduced price but this year comes in three different versions: the standard edition, Ultimate edition and the affordable new Select package.
The cheaper Select edition costs just $199 but gets you only 11 instruments, while the $1199 Ultimate version includes 87 instruments. The mid-range standard edition includes 45 instruments for $599.
Released in September, Komplete 11 also includes other software new to the bundle: version 5.6 of the Kontakt sampler, Nils Frahm’s Una Corda piano instrument and Kinetic Metal, which uses metallic sources to create sound.
Other new tools include an acoustic guitar instrument, sampled Indian instruments, the Replika delay unit and Reaktor 6, the latest version of the popular synth that also allows you to create your own modular system in software.
Form is the most intriguing of the new instruments, allowing you to drag and drop any sample and mould it into a wide variety of different sounds.

According to Native Instruments, Form lets you focus in on specific parts of a sample and use it as the oscillator for anything from percussion to ambient pads.
The package is Native Instruments’ most substantial new product of 2016, though the company released a unique instrument called Flesh made in collaboration with Tim Exile in late 2015.
Each are available from September 1 as either download or boxed editions – physical versions land as either hard drive or USB drive formats.
