Solomun Remixes Paul Kalkbrenner’s ‘Cloud Rider’
It’s always a rare treat when one superstar artist remixes another star’s original work -it offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverging avenues of artistic expression and taste. Indeed, Solomun’s remix of Paul Kalkbrenner’s single Cloud Rider does just that.
The original ‘Cloud Rider’ – the first single off of Kalkbrenner’s forthcoming seventh studio album 7- is an upbeat, soulful affair that brilliantly incorporates D-Train’s soulful vocal sample into a melodic bit of techno. Solomun’s interpretation does nothing of the sort – instead opting to shroud the famous sample in an ethereal and brooding concoction of tech house mastery.
The Diynamic label boss certainly continues his streak of critically acclaimed releases with his take on ‘Cloud Rider’ – a streak that has been active since 2012 when the legendary DJ took home Mixmag’s DJ of the Year Award as well as Resident Advisor’s Remix of the Year Award for his take on Noir’s and Haze’s ‘Around’.
Solomun’s remix of ‘Cloud Rider’ will be released via Columbia Records later in the summer, while Paul Kalkbrenner’s 7 will fittingly release on August 7.
7 comes at the end of a milestone twelve months for Kalkbrenner, last year he was asked by the German Government to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, by performing in front of Brandenburg Gate to over 500,000 people. While in March, after releasing on independent labels for 15 years (10 years at BPitch Control and 5 years on his own label), Paul signed a long-term deal with Sony International | Columbia. Meanwhile he has spent the last year hunkered in his East Berlin studio working on 7. Pre-order 7 on iTunes.
Danny Daze Preps EP for Ultramajic, Shares Snippets
Next week, Danny Daze will return to Ultramajic with his latest EP, Dual, his second release for Ultramajic and the follow up to last years Silicon EP.
The two-track EP comprises of the hypnotic “Ready2Go” and “Rhythm Box,” a warehouse-ready techno bomb. “On ‘Ready2Go’ I wanted to make a track that is driving and influenced by dryness,” Daze explains. “The bassline and synth bell tone are very dry and represent a Detroit techno sound that has always influenced me. With ‘Rhythm Box,’ I wanted to make a pounding techno record with good drums. The vocal influence came from an old movie, called ‘Liquid Sky,’ one of my go-to movies for inspiration.“
You can hear snippets of Dual below, ahead of the full EP release on Beatport June 8, followed by the worldwide release on June 22.
