Apple may be known for its unique-looking ads and billboards, but Chicago indie band OK Go says the computer giant plagiarized their video for "The Writing's on the Wall" at this week's big product announcement.
Anyone who watched the announcement in person or online saw the promo video, which features a camera moving through a large warehouse-type space, and lettering showing up on the walls, furniture and other various objects.
OK Go says the Apple video looks suspiciously similar to their video for "The Writing's on the Wall." The band's manager, Andy Gershon, told Bloomberg Businessweek that the group had met with Apple in April to pitch the concept video.
Apple reportedly said no thanks, then hired the production team behind the video for "The Writing's on the Wall" to create their promo.
"The videos speak for themselves, and you can draw your own conclusions," said Gershon, who admitted that legal action was unlikely to succeed. "You could imagine circumstances where there’s a legal claim here, although I think it’s unlikely to succeed.
"That said, from a PR perspective, I’d say it wasn’t a smart move by Apple."
So is the video a ripoff? You be the judge:
