Could a return to the stage be in the works? The inimitable Tom Waits has signed with an agent for the first time in more than two decades. Billboard reports that the William Morris Endeavor will represent the living legend in all areas. It may just be business minutiae, but Tom Waits hasn’t gigged regularly since 2008′s Glitter and Doom tour. However, he did perform at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit concert late last year. Maybe it’s nothing, but maybe he’s prepping to return to the stage. We’ve seen stranger news this year. |
80-minute TV recording of Krautrock pioneers Can in 1970 surfaces

Halleluhwah. Following the amazing TV footage of a young Kraftwerk that surfaced last month, a bumper 80-minute recording of Krautrock pioneers Can’s concert at the same venue has now emerged. At this point in their career the band were still pretty fresh-faced – 1969′s Monster Movie hadn’t done much, and the far more enjoyable Soundtracks was still brand new. The career defining Tago Mago was still some time off, and seeing the band at this point in their career is a rare treat. The lineup was Damo Suzuki on vocals, Holger Czukay on bass, Irmin Schmidt on keyboard, Michael Karoli on guitar and the incredible Jaki Liebezeit on drums. Take a look at the concert (which sadly appears to cut abruptly at the 79 minute mark) below. [via Dangerous Minds] |

M.I.A. might be in the middle of a prolonged legal battle with the NFL, but it hasn’t kept her out of the spotlight. The polarizing performer has teamed up with android-obsessive Janelle Monae to help launch Audi’s brand new A3, and unlike most corporate partnerships this one looks pretty interesting. M.I.A. will be performing a launch party in NYC while Monae will be doing one on the other side of the US in Los Angeles, and at the end of each show each performer will join the other in a hologram duet. Seriously. Unlike Tupac, both M.I.A. and Janelle Monae are still alive which makes these projections feel slightly less like a message from beyond the grave, and according to the press release the technology has improved somewhat too, utilizing “3D projection mapping to add layered depth of field perception with animated graphic content”. …or is The Abbot simply trying to raise demand? The Wu-Tang Clan shocked the world last month with the announcement of The Wu – Once Upon A Time In Shaolin, a 31-song record that will be released as an edition of one, taken on an art tour, and sold to the highest bidder. Expected to cost millions, Wu ringleader RZA says they might already have a buyer. “Offers came in at $2 million, somebody offered $5 million yesterday,” he tells Billboard. “I’ve been getting a lot of emails: some from people I know, some from people I don’t know, and they’re also emailing other members of my organization. “So far, $5 million is the biggest number… I don’t know how to measure it, but it gives us an idea that what we’re doing is being understood by some. And there are some good peers of mine also, who are very high-ranking in the film business and the music business, sending me a lot of good will. It’s been real positive.” While it’s not unfathomable for someone to spend $5 million on a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang album, this could also be RZA just doing his due diligence to make sure demand is high. As FACT has documented, Once Upon A Time In Shaolin is just the latest in long line of absurdly limited releases. |

DC’s U Street Music Hall gets into the festival game. Fresh off their four year anniversary, leading US club U Street Music Hall has announced a day-long festival. Held at DC’s Union Market, the appropriately-named Union BBQ will feature two stages of music and a variety of food vendors — including plenty of BBQ. Headlining the party will be Jamie xx with rising talent Kaytranada, disco-house act Viceroy, the eclectic Orchard Lounge, and a stage dedicated to U Hall’s popular Moombahton Massive parties also on the bill (with more acts to follow). 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me takes the top spot with 905 swears. The number crunchers over at Best Tickets have used their analytic toolkit for a study that would make the Parents Music Resource Center blush: a comprehensive look of the most profane artists and albums in popular rap music. Using the five rap albums deemed more influential or important (based on sales figures, name recognition, “hit density” and more) from the years 1985 to 2013, the study found an average of 217.7 “cuss words” per album. While 2Pac notched the top two spots on the rap album list (for All Eyez on Me and Until the End of Time), Too $hort’s Raw, Uncut & X-Rated lives up to its title with the most profanity per song. Southern rap heavyweights Geto Boys, Scarface and Juvenille were named most profane artists. The study also graphed profanity, use of “the N-word,” homophobia and misogyny over the same period. Unsurprisingly, Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP not only made 2000 the most lyrically homophobic year, but it was “BY FAR the most homophobic album” in the study. Similarly, Raw, Uncut & X-Rated was the study’s most misogynistic album, with 26.4 misogynistic profanities per song. Check out the full study (with charts and downloadable data) over at Best Tickets. |

Ross Tones readies his first full length album for new home Houndstooth. As Throwing Snow, Tones has released music for Local Action, Ho Tep, Sneaker Social Club and his own Snowfall imprint. Earlier this year, he linked up with Fabric’s Houndstooth imprint for Pathfinder, an EP to be “listened to during journeys.” Mosaic continues down the (ahem) path started by Pathfinder, fuses Tones’ diverse musical interests into a cohesive project: “elements of folk and real instruments combined with drum funk, electronica and samples,” according to a press release, along with appearances by vocalists Py, Adda Kaleh, Kid A and more. “I don’t feel I’m in any way using one influence in any of the tracks, more bringing disparate elements together as a collage,” he writes. “Each part is distinct but when bought together there is a bigger picture that the listener can find points of reference.” The album is due out on double-vinyl, CD and digital on June 2 and is available to pre-order now. The cover art and tracklist are below, along with the video for ‘The Tempest’. Directed by Rick Robin, the clip features angelic sprites doing battle in endless space. 1. Avarice 2. The Tempest (feat. Adda Kaleh) 3. Hypnotise (feat. Kid A) 4. Linguis 5. As You Fall (feat. Py) 6. Pathfinder 7. The Void (feat. Jassy Grez) 8. Maera (feat. Adda Kaleh) 9. All The Lights (feat. Plus, the New York avant-pop act heads to Europe. Earlier this year, Ava Luna returned with Electric Balloon, another spiky collection of self-described “nervous soul.” Those gorgeous doo-wop harmonies and post-punk angularities are on display in ‘Genesee’, which now has a video. “Here at home, with its multitude of comforts, we’ve just sat down to pass away the afternoon,” they write in a statement. “But whose home? Beneath even the most mannered facade dances a masked, fluffy chaos.” Watch the video below; it was produced and directed by Ava Luna’s Becca Kauffman with Courtney Powell and Ana Veselic. The band will hit Europe for a baker’s dozen of gigs starting later this month. Diddy, or Puff Daddy, or whatever he’s called today, is set to finally release his collaborative album with Guy Gerber, 11:11. Diddy and Gerber announced that they were making an album a few years back, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it would never arrive. However, Diddy hosted a listening party for 11:11 at the Red Bull Guest House on Saturday night, so it’s safe to presume it’s arriving soon. According to Billboard, Diddy described the album as a product of “demented after hours minds”, and marks a follow-up of sorts to Diddy / Dirty Money’s cult favourite Last Train to Paris. Incredibly, RBMA report that Diddy wanted to call the album Ketamine. That’s that whole “demented after hours” thing explained then, we guess. Stream Last Train to Paris highlight ‘Shades’ below. |

After quite a wait, James Lavelle‘s UNKLE project returns to the remixing game. Last we heard from Lavelle, he was revealing the first acts on his handpicked line-up for this year's Meltdown festival. Today, Lavelle slips out his curator’s seat and back into the producer’s chair, unveiling the first official UNKLE remix in four years. Lavelle’s subjects are sprightly garage rock combo Radkey; the UNKLE “reconstruction” reimagines the original as high-budget, high-drama electronica. Click below to listen. Lavelle caught the band’s debut London set at the Camden Barfly last year, and he’s since enlisted them for Meltdown. According to Lavelle, the commission was a no-brainer: "Having not done an UNKLE remix for some time, Radkey's 'Romance Dawn' seemed like the perfect track to come back with. This band have endless energy and excitement and you can’t buy that shit!" Lavelle’s Meltdown will feature appearances from Neneh Cherry, ESG, Goldie (performing Timeless in full with The Heritage Orchestra), Mark Lanegan, Mica Levi performing Under The Skin, and more. The first lady of Eglo Records brings in the big guns for her first album. Soul singer Fatima will release her debut album Yellow Memories this May featuring production from a cracking line-up of like-minded musicians including her label boss Floating Points, Detroit’s Theo Parrish and Stones Throw’s Oh No, plus Scoop DeVille, Computer Jay and Knxwledge. The album follows the Swedish-Senegalese vocalist’s recent double A-side, the Flako-produced pairing of ‘Family’ and ‘La Neta’. According to the label, we can expect “a modern take on classic soul and RnB” with a dash of “melancholic introspection and vibrant, candy-coated melody”. Fatima will also be heading back to the UK and Europe from her current residence in New York for a bunch of live gigs accompanied by the Eglo Live Band, kicking off at Manchester’s Antwerp Mansion on May 3, while the album launch party will take place at London’s Jazz Cafe on May 6. Yellow Memories is out on CD, vinyl and digital on May 12. See the tracklist below. Luke Younger’s Alter label is one of the UK’s best kept secrets, and has long been a source for some of the most unexpected belters we’ve had dribble through the office stereo. This latest release from gallic experimentalists Opera Mort (aka Jo Tanz and Laurent Gerard) is no different, and whilst most of us might not have been digging deep enough to grab the duo’s 2009 debut album Le Tour De L’Oubli, that’s no reason to ignore its crucial followup. Dédales was edited down from a series of improvised live recordings, and as such is imbued with a kinetic energy and creativity that’s often left for dead on most po-faced experimental full-lengths. ‘Les Spirales Messmer’ is our first taste of the record, and exhibits Opera Mort’s soupy, unsettling explorations perfectly with wobbly basses, cooing synths and percussion that chatters more than grandad’s dentures after a sneaky rub of whizz. Dédales will be released on April 14 via Alter. |

Teased last week, Lone’s new album Reality Testing has now been officially unveiled. Matt Cutler has spoken specifically about his influences on the record, citing “Detroit techno,” “old Chicago house” and “hip-hop” as the primary spark in the album’s inception: “I wanted to make an album that had both hip-hop and house beats, but that weren’t completely different from each other, that shared the same sort of vibe. I love the idea of two things sat side by side, but instead of it seeming like they’re complete opposites, [it's more that] those two things could almost be the same thing.”Last year’s excellent ‘Airglow Fires‘ looks like it has made its way to the album, and Cutler has shared new track ’2 Is 8′, which seems to illustrate the album’s rich set of influences pretty succinctly. You can take a listen to the track below. Reality Testing will be released on R&S in June. Ex-Moloko singer Róisín Murphy might have been a little quiet in the last couple of years, but that’s all set to change. Brand new EP Mi Senti finds Murphy dipping her toe into classic 60s and 70s Italian pop, taking on songs from Mina ('Ancora Ancora Ancora' and 'Non Credere'), Patty Pravo ('Pensiero Stupendo'), Lucio Battisti ('Acora Tu') and Gino Paoli ('La Gatta'). She’s quick to point out however that the record is not simply an “Italian project” but a “singing project,” which was intended to challenge her and take her to another level entirely. "Quite apart from the language, in some of the songs I was on the edge of what my voice can do,” she reveals. “For the Mina ones in particular ['Ancora Ancora Ancora' and 'Non Credere'] there were tears and I almost walked away and gave up." Recorded in London and Ibiza with her Milanese partner Sebastiano Properzi, Mi Senti also includes one new composition 'In Sintesi', which is also in Italian. Murphy is currently working on a new solo album, and a collection of remixes is due for release later in the year. Mi Senti will be released on limited vinyl and digital on May 28 via The Vinyl Factory. Tracklist: 01 Ancora Ancora Ancora 02 Pensiero Stupendo 03 Acora Tu 04 In Sintesi 05 Non Credere 06 La Gatta |

Hot Chip frontman Alexis Taylor has revealed the next milestone in his career. While Taylor has spent some time recently challenging audiences with experimental and often improvised material at his recent residency at Dalston’s Servant Jazz Quarters, it appears that he was ferreting away plenty of understated pop songs concurrently. Await Barbarians is the bespectacled singer’s second solo album proper, and set for release on June 9 on the esteemed Domino imprint. We’ve got a sneaky taste of the material too, with new track ‘Elvis Has Left the Building’ – a downbeat, mopey number that sounds like a screwed ‘n chopped Postal Service on Quaaludes. |

Shangaan Electro’s Nozinja has signed to Warp. The UK label will release “fresh tracks” from the producer in the coming months, with a new live show planned for this Summer. Nozinja is considered the originator of Shangaan Electro, a lightspeed form of dance music that was developed in South Africa, and popularised in Europe through Honest Jon’s compilation New Wave Dance Music from South Africa. Since the release of New Wave Dance Music, Nozinja has taken the Shangaan Electro live show around Europe – it’s typically him DJing, with the tracks getting gradually faster, while his crew of in-house dancers perform to the crowd. He’s also housed Shangaan dancing workshops – as FACT’s Chal Ravens experienced last year - and been remixed by the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Rashad & Spinn, Actress and Shackleton. Nozinja’s forthcoming live dates follow, as well as Shangaan anthem ‘Nwa Gezani My Love’. Thanks to the graft of reissue labels and canny collectors, there's an embarrassment of neglected, forgotten or misunderstood material being unearthed week by week. The volume of new-old music doesn't outpace new-new music, of course, but it's not too far behind either. With so many more archival releases turning up on shelves, we've worked though the stacks to pick our 10 favourite reissues and retrospectives of the last month. March’s children: Donato Dozzy on killer form; Iranian folk, recorded almost 100 years ago; undeniable Hieroglyphics camp hip-hop; and Prurient behaving very badly indeed. Alternatively, check out our best reissues of 2013 rundown.

Available on: Modern Love After four years dormant, something has set Millie & Andrea off again. Officially outing themselves as Miles Whittaker (of Demdike Stare) and Andy Stott, the pair have returned via a surprise debut album and a whole new (and old) set of considerations. Drop The Vowels is essentially a mongrel breakbeat album, built all wrong and full of off-kilter asides. But while stuffed full of familiar drum loops chopped in blocky, messy ways, it manages to be individual and different, mainly due to its wild production. Only two tracks have the same crystalline, dubby rave quality of early releases: 'Spectral Source', whose dancehall bounce is run through a nest of cymbals and glassy bubbles; and, obviously, the 2009 single 'Temper Tantrum', whose HATE-like hardcore donks and whipped snare cycles are included here too. The rest of the record is as wide in style as their previous run of singles, but now purposefully overloaded and blown-out, a densely compacted sound with a different purpose and character. 'GIF RIFF' opens the record with a foreign folk song and deep resonant skin drum, thumb pianos and clattering metallic percussion set deep within a resonant chamber. 'Stay Ugly' is woodshop Gescom, a splintered baseball bat. For those unfamiliar with Millie and Andrea’s individual projects, 'Back Down' is what someone may have expected from their collaboration; slow, grinding washes of techno from filtered, red-lining bass, ethereal vocals and a buzzy 909. Two particularly varied moments don't quite fit. One is the finale 'Quay', as strange as it is lovely – somewhere between Badalamenti, Danny Elfman, and the orchestral warping of The Hers – but simply feeling out of place. The other is 'Corrosive', the duo's scuzzy take on trap. With 8-bit arpeggios and hi hats zipping at 160bpm to match jungle breaks, it's fun but sticks out by not really exceeding the sum of its parts like the rest of the album or its preceding trap single 'Stage 2'. But it's a surprise – and to the duo's credit – that Drop The Vowels doesn't have more of these 'x genre meets y genre' moments. And despite being predominantly made from breakbeats everybody knows, it's difficult to pinpoint how the pair keep the listener's attention so well. Three quarters of the way through the record, as 'Drop The Vowels' opens with a lonely, stringy Hot Pants jungle break, their efforts finally seem to waver. But then a counter loop is chopped against it in absurdly simple fashion and the track is shocked into life, now low slung and prowling, suddenly one of the record's best. However they manage it, this album is a good example of how to revive twenty-year-old sample relics and construct new, wildly dilapidated material from them like they were so much reclaimed timber. |

Following the Chicago house original’s death this week, there’s a campaign to get ‘Your Love’, Frankie Knuckles‘ classic single with Jamie Principle, to #1. The song can be bought here. Whether that’s the best way to pay tribute to Knuckles, of course, is up for dispute: in an interview last year, he explained that “I have no relationship with Trax Records [who released 'Your Love']. “Anytime I got some new product coming out they try and piggyback on whatever that it is that I’m doing to try and make whatever they can make off of it. They’re barnacles.” Trax, it should be added, has undergone several changes in terms of personal over the years (and last year’s Traxbox was released by Harmless), but Knuckles does seem keen to avoid any association with them in the aforementioned interview. Update: As pointed out on Twitter, the campaign to get ‘Your Love’ to #1 has now been changed to point people to Noctural Groove’s reissue of the track, rather than Trax’s. The dance music world and beyond has been in mourning since Knuckles’ death was announced this week, with the major of Chicago one of the latest to pay tribute. "Today, Chicago says goodbye to one of its most treasured cultural pioneers, Frankie Knuckles, the Godfather of House Music”, Rahm Emanuel said in a statement yesterday. “Over his long career Frankie made his way into the ranks of those artists and innovators who came to this city not just to contribute to a musical genre, but to create one themselves. In doing so, he also made his way into the hearts of those who knew him and the many more who followed his work. “While the stretch of Jefferson Street between Monroe and Van Buren is officially known as "Frankie Knuckles Way", all those who are part of the house music genre, no matter where they are from, walk along the path Frankie created. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends, and our thanks for all the good times will always go to Frankie Knuckles." A gigantic archive of Frankie Knuckles mixes was launched this week, while RBMA have put together a playlist of 50 classics from the Warehouse, the club where Knuckles was a resident. There’s also a moving and informative comment from photographer and Warehouse member Jerry Boles in the comments section of our report on Knuckles death, we’ve re-posted it below. As one of the original member of the US Studio The Warehouse located just a few block of the Sear Towers. This is where in my personal opinion where the genre “House Music” was originated and Frankie being the first DJ and consider the “House” DJ for the Warehouse. He created a following within the Underground Music World whereas people would come from all over just get up close and personal to see him turn the tables and create sounds never heard of before. Long time friend Robert Owens who also was an original member was discovered by Frankie and given a chance to exhibit skills. Frankie played a very significant role in elevated Mr. Owens’s career. During that time as with today DJ would include their nick names with their government for marketing purposes and how they were refer to: Frankie was refer as Frankie “Boom Boom” Knuckles because of his Boom Boom beats in the beginning of each mix or during the record extra breakdown with the beat per minutes structure of the a record. To understand that is to listed for segment a song whereas the singing stop and their is based structure for several seconds or more .. this is normally when the opportunity to blend a beat or add another beat of a different songs vocally and the transition is so smooth one will think it was originally recorded that way. Robert Owens was refer as “ET” extra terrestrial as his goal was taken you on a tour of space and encounter aliens. Each had their own techinuqe of spinning with sound effects such Storming Rain, Thunder, Lighting, A Woman Screaming in Horror House or even the incoming a Locomotive train. There was patron at the Warehouse would stand in the middle of the floor and holler “911″ eventually that voice was included into some of the mixes . .. Frankie is legendary will be remembered for all he has done with this community |

Folk musician Beverley Martin has let out a previously unheard collaboration with Nick Drake, started just months before the singer died. Speaking to The Independent, Martyn explains that they wrote the lyrics together in Martin’s Hastings home. It remained unfinished until last here, when she decided to complete it for her new album The Phoenix And The Turtle. "I couldn't even think about the song for so long”, says Martin, “because it brought up so much pain. It took a while to finish after that point." Stream it above. |

With all dubstep’s ups and downs in the past couple of years – the bursting of the bubble at the commercial end, and the subsequent hype on the new wave of deeper producers (Kahn, Gantz, Compa and co) – there’s one aspect of the sound that has rather slipped into the shadows: soulful dubstep. Most associated with Quest, Silkie and the Anti Social family of artists and DJs, this sound is neither leap-around aggy, nor eyes-down space-case material, but combines heavy bass with melody and groove and aims squarely at people who like to dance. And increasingly, away from the glare of hype, it seems to have taken root outside the UK in some diverse locations: the BPDR crew in NZ, the Beaming Light label in Estonia, and Lutetia Dubz in Paris are all steadfastly representing. Lutetia Dubz‘s Marjolaine Clafouti says that they are actually reaping benefits from France having never caught on majorly to the dubstep scene, and that there is now a growing scene in Paris with regular nights where 16-23 year olds treat it as ‘new’ music. And the music Lutetia Dubz puts out is in fact consistently fresh, as this g-funk-laced tune from their thirteenth release out later this month, amply demonstrates. Ooh, as they say, la la. |

The latest 12″ on Phonica White – the vinyl-only branch of the Phonica label – comes from Andrew Cole, a.k.a. Luv Jam. The last few years have seen Cole release on We Play House, Tsuba and more. His last contribution to Phonica White, ‘Mature Oak’ (backed with a beaut of a remix from Cottam), was one of the label’s finest, so it’s welcome news to have him back. This time, it’s two tracks tilted ‘Quip22′ and ‘Synth68′, with semi-recent FACT mixer Prosumer on remix duty for the former. Rhythm Section International kicks off with a locally sourced release. DJ and promoter Bradley Zero has extended his Rhythm Section empire with a record label. Rhythm Section International launches this spring with an album from South London producer Al Dobson Jr. Titled Rye Lane Volume 1, a reference to the clubnight’s location, the record’s 11 tracks also make reference to further-flung locales: ‘Peru Timing’, ‘Columbian Special’, ‘Cameroun Special’. No release date has been set, but the album is expected before summer. Zero has been running his Rhythm Section parties since 2009, attracting a cult following from dancers lured by its broad music policy, reliable residents and occasional big guests like Andy Blake and Funkineven.
