The eclectic French producer returns with his fifth full-length.

Joakim will release the follow-up to 2011′s Nothing Gold next month on his own Tigersushi imprint. Unlike his previous albums, Tropics of Love was recorded in New York.

“I think I was partly influenced by the machines I had on hand,” he tells RA. “The SP1200 has this grainy lo-fi sound that reminds of Art Of Noise, for instance, which was an influence. The modular defines a lot of the sound atmosphere of the album. Things like Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon for the synthy tropical atmosphere, and modern R&B, both commercial and the weirder bass stuff that is to me a sort of experimental R&B.”

Tropics of Love is due out May 26 via Because Music / Tigersushi. The cover art and tracklist are below, along with a cover of Neil Young’s ‘On The Beach’ that would have sounded great on the Drive OST.

Sure, City Kids may be a few months old, as it was included on Natural‘s free, DJBooth-hosted Ways to Go LP, which dropped in November. But when a record is this dope, it could be decades old and still sound brand new. Fresh off dropping Election Day for our DJBooth Freestyle Series, Natural returns with …   Click the link for the stream and download.

Tom Waits signs with booking agency for first time in 20 years
Could a return to the stage be in the works?
The inimitable Tom Waits has signed with an agent for the first time in more than two decades. Billboard reports that the William Morris Endeavor will represent the living legend in all areas.
It may just be business minutiae, but Tom Waits hasn’t gigged regularly since 2008′s Glitter and Doom tour. However, he did perform at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit concert late last year.
Maybe it’s nothing, but maybe he’s prepping to return to the stage. We’ve seen stranger news this year.

Mas Ysa is still a very new act, and so most of the discussion about Thomas Arseneault has to rely on reference points. He's opened for Deerhunter and RZA, and there's precedent for certain sonic aspects of his intriguing EP, Worth—the polished, dramatic synth-pop of Future Islands, quavering vocals that put a Xiu Xiu-esque chokehold on your attention, M83's rocket-fueled dynamics. "Shame" is the highlight from Worth, and it's due to Arseneault proving he's a solo act, but more importantly, a one-man show.

The lyrics are nearly impossible to make out in full, but when he mentions a friend's skateboard left in the park before one of its many volcanic outbursts, it's apparent that the memories of whatever happened are nearly impossible to handle without losing your shit. Thomas Arseneault performs on "Shame" like someone who is trying to raise the dead by pure emotion alone.

                          Mas Ysa: "Shame" on SoundCloud.
