The first ever YouTube Awards took place last night, and they were a bit of a mixed bag. That's probably not surprising, given that this was a brand new awards show aimed at relatively new medium.
On one hand, there were some brilliant, boundary pushing live performances by artists ranging from M.I.A. to the Arcade Fire. The whole thing was creative directed by Spike Jonze, which explains a lot. On the other hand, the mics didn't always work, hosts Jason Schwartzman and Reggie Watts didn't always look like they knew what they were doing, and some of the stunts, like digging the name of the "Response of the Year" winner out of a cake, kind of fell flat.
