Swans’ Norman Westberg to release MRI on Room40 Posted: 23 Feb 2016 05:22 PM PST The limited 2012 release is reborn on the Australian label. While Swans gear up for their upcoming final album, Lawrence English’s label Room40 have put a spotlight on the solo work of longtime guitarist Norman Westberg. Last year, they released the new 13 and this April they’ll reissue Westberg’s MRI. Initially self-released in 2012, the album has been remastered and expanded with the addition of the nearly 20-minute ‘Lost Mine’. Look for the album April 1, pre-order from Room40 and revisit last year’s ‘Frostbite Falls’ below. XXL Freshmen 2014 announced; includes Kevin Gates, Chance the Rapper and more Posted: 05 May 2014 03:42 PM PDT The hip-hop magazine announces its rappers to watch on BET’s 106 & Park. XXL headed to BET to announce this year’s freshman class, dubbed “The Dirty Dozen.” Chicago is repped heavily with Chance the Rapper, Lil Durk, Save Money’s Vic Mensa and Free Crack street spitter Lil Bibby on the list. The list is heavy with guys that sing more than rap (Rich Homie Quan, August Alsina and Ty Dolla $ign), which makes sense in a rap scene dominated by the likes of Drake and Future. TDE’s Isaiah Rashad and newcomers Troy Ave, Jon Connor and fan-voted Jarren Benton round out the list. 2013′s Freshmen list included Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Angel Haze and Chief Keef, among others. Past classes have tabbed Kendrick Lamar, Future, YG and Danny Brown, but XXL has had their share of busts (Charles Hamilton, anyone?). As expected, there is a bit of crossover with FACT’s list of rappers to watch in 2014, with Gates appearing on last year’s Hip-Hop for Dummies list.

Swans: "Oxygen" Posted: 15 Apr 2014 01:48 PM PDT   The latter-day Swans have become synonymous with a certain imposing sprawl, specializing in the sort of colossal, half-hour long pieces that require you to book off time in your iCal just to listen to them. By comparison, "Oxygen", the second teaser released from the upcoming To Be Kind, is practically a pop single, not just for its relavite brevity (only eight minutes!), but its structural simplicity and jugular-clenching force. Forsaking the band's usual ominous build-ups/breakdowns and carefully orchestrated chaos for sheer, unrelenting pig-fuckery, "Oxygen"—which shares a title, some lyrics, and absolutely nothing else with a 2010 solo-acoustic Michael Gira track—is the closest thing to a straight-ahead rocker the 21st-century Swans have produced. (And tellingly, it's the rare To Be Kind track previewed on last year's live set, Not Here/Not Now, that came out of the studio sounding just as filthy as it did in concert.) It's a reminder that, even as the scope of their albums turns evermore epic, Swans still belong to a tradition of deranged, debased punk that the connects the bruising attack of the Jesus Lizard's "Wheelchair Epidemic," the woof-woof feralism of the Birthday Party's "Happy Birthday," and the sax 'n' violence of the Stooges' "Fun House." "Feed me now!" Gira screams at the song's precise half-way point, but "Oxygen" is a song about breathing that doesn't give you any chance to do so.

Joakim announces Tropics Of Love LP, shares vocoded Neil Young cover Posted: 15 Apr 2014 11:28 AM PDT The eclectic French producer returns with his fifth full-length. Joakim will release the follow-up to 2011′s Nothing Gold next month on his own Tigersushi imprint. Unlike his previous albums, Tropics of Love was recorded in New York. “I think I was partly influenced by the machines I had on hand,” he tells RA. “The SP1200 has this grainy lo-fi sound that reminds of Art Of Noise, for instance, which was an influence. The modular defines a lot of the sound atmosphere of the album. Things like Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon for the synthy tropical atmosphere, and modern R&B, both commercial and the weirder bass stuff that is to me a sort of experimental R&B.” Tropics of Love is due out May 26 via Because Music / Tigersushi. The cover art and tracklist are below, along with a cover of Neil Young’s ‘On The Beach’ that would have sounded great on the Drive OST.

Swans: "A Little God in My Hands" Posted: 26 Mar 2014 11:53 AM PDT   Swans didn't need to gain any more swagger in their step following the supremely confident 2012 album The Seer, but "A Little God In My Hands" indicates there are no limits to where Michael Gira could take this project. His firm hand steers the band through a surprising dip into funk as the song begins—but a version of funk that's just as sickly and disease-addled as Swans are when they're closer to the rock firmament. Gira's vocal sounds like it's being delivered with a noose slowly tightening around his neck, suggesting all the vital components that run throughout Swans' music in its many guises: pain, suffering, a wringing of hands to the sky.

Bjork Biophilia Björk 2011 | Nonesuch Twenty-seven years into her career, Bjork is running the risk of becoming a pop music Alexander the Great, weeping for there are no more worlds to conquer. She has reconfigured her sound in nearly every conceivable way, moving from adventurous electro on the still-classic Post through skewed orch-pop (Vespertine), voice-only compositions (Medulla) and globe-gobbling world music (Volta). She is one of a very few musicians — there are maybe three of them... worldwide — whose rare failures are even interesting, because they at least display evidence of ambition and novel ideas. That ambition extends to her staging. A run of shows at the Hall of Science in Queens, New York featured specially-constructed instruments and a loose theme (including voiceover narration) about the destructive power of nature. Kelly toured in 2007, he first appeared in silhouette, wearing a top hat, standing at the top of a giant staircase, underneath a neon sign that read "Mr. Showbiz." When he toured in 2010, his first appearance was in a five-minute black-and-white, note-perfect Casablanca-style short film. When he toured in 2012, he had two lackeys bring out an oversized white throne halfway through the show just so he could... sit relax for a number. Simply put: R. Kelly is a showman, and the live setting is where he gets to indulge the frustrated musical theatre director within. Songs become set pieces (In '07, he performed "Feelin' On Yo Booty" as an aria, tongue firmly in cheek), the banter is tautly-scripted and generally hilarious, and Kells visibly relishes every indulgent flourish. To say nothing of the fact that he remains one of our greatest living male vocalists, that he sings live every time, and that even 30 seconds of hearing him reinforces the notion that he is the heir to greats like Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye — even if those two never used an extended jungle metaphor to sing about doin' it. — JEK more »
