1. Tim Hecker, Virgins

 

Tim Hecker’s Virgins is a lot of things, but an easy, passive listening experience is not one of them. Hit play, put on headphones and Hecker’s earthy electronic production permeates your head, forcing you to listen completely free from other distractions. Even if you don’t give in right away, over the course of 12 songs and 48 minutes, Hecker will fill your head with such a lush, cinematic soundscape that you won’t have much choice. Synths vibrate and soar, sounds fade between left and right ear drums, and mysterious noises are introduced as quickly as they disappear. His songs can be uplifting, moody or violent, sometimes all at the same time, and together it is nothing short of breathtaking. This is music at its utmost ambient. — Jesse Kinos-Goodin

Featured as part of their monthly Label Spotlight, Amazon UK are also giving away a free 16-track Sampler, featuring music from Buena Vista Social Club, Ry Cooder, Ali Farka Touré and more. “World Circuit Records began life in London in the mid-80s with a focus on Cuban and West African artist-led releases, amongst other world music styles, and by 1993 had already claimed its first Grammy Award-winning LP with Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder’s Talking Timbuktu. In 1997, the label released another Ry Cooder project, the phenomenal Buena Vista Social Club, to a global applause which saw the Cuban band sell millions of records. It’s outstandingly beautiful, hauntingly melancholic and yet uplifting too – without doubt it’s musical to the max. If an album could give the feeling of floating through space it would be this… For a man who likes to talk, I’m left with surprisingly little to say about this, other than it really does blow my mind how good it is. If we could marry albums, I’d propose. – Tom Coulling

From Icelandic champions Hjaltalin through to heavy hitters The Physics House Band, it was amazing to see so many brilliant artists in action. Holy Esque, were a definite highlight, packing out the Dome Studio Theatre with a stellar performance. This compilation is a tidy little keepsake from a great festival. – Claire Lothian
