World Circuit – Label Spotlight on Amazon UK Posted: 13 Dec 2013 02:50 AM PST World Circuit Records are one of Amazon UK’s Labels Of The Month. Featured as part of their monthly Label Spotlight, Amazon UK are also giving away a free 16-track Sampler, featuring music from Buena Vista Social Club, Ry Cooder, Ali Farka Touré and more. “World Circuit Records began life in London in the mid-80s with a focus on Cuban and West African artist-led releases, amongst other world music styles, and by 1993 had already claimed its first Grammy Award-winning LP with Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder’s Talking Timbuktu. In 1997, the label released another Ry Cooder project, the phenomenal Buena Vista Social Club, to a global applause which saw the Cuban band sell millions of records. It’s outstandingly beautiful, hauntingly melancholic and yet uplifting too – without doubt it’s musical to the max. From Icelandic champions Hjaltalin through to heavy hitters The Physics House Band, it was amazing to see so many brilliant artists in action. Holy Esque, were a definite highlight, packing out the Dome Studio Theatre with a stellar performance. This compilation is a tidy little keepsake from a great festival. – Claire Lothian
