Solid Steel (28th March) In the latest instalment, DK has put together a mix unveiling some of the latest gems from the Ninja Tune family of labels. This includes an EXCLUSIVE play of Machinedrum’s stunning remix of 'Runnin’ by Kelis - available on the special, indies-only, limited edition version of her album 'Food', alongside the other remixes in this show from Breach and Will Saul. Then it's the turn of Machinedrum to be remixed by Seafloor, two from NameBrandSound, the VIP mix of 'Hardcourage' from Falty DL, a track from the forthcoming Mr Scruff album 'Friendly Bacteria', Teebs, classic Roots Manuva and two more for Record Store Day, from Illum Sphere and a Psych classic from The Animated Egg, released alongside If Music. All this, plus second spins for Taraval and the Cid Rim produced Theophilus London, previous guest Moresounds, future guests Max Graef and Leon Vynehall, and music from Ferox, PhOtOmachine and Vox Populi.

Solid Steel Radio Show 29/11/2013 - Part 3 + 4 - DK + DJ Food

In Hour 2 the countdown starts for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London with a mix from DK that features some of the artists playing including Mr Scruff, Robin Hexstatic, Four Tet and the new single from Illum Sphere. There's more new music from Ninja Tune with forthcoming tracks from Falty DL, Beat Spacek and the Maya Jane Coles remix for Bonobo. 

DJ Food steps up with a companion piece to last week's 30 minute mix - Strictly Kev delves deeper and darker into ghostly electronic waters. An acoustic cover of Boards of Canada's Reach For the Dead, V.I.V.E.K.'s stunning Mantra and Machinedrum's Centre Your Love lighten the mood slghtly before we delve into witchcraft and sounds from abandoned buildings.

Solid Steel Radio Show 9/8/2013 Part 3 + 4 - Thundercat Interview + DK

In hour 2 it's an interview with bassist/songwriter/vocalist Stephen Bruner, aka Thundercat. Will Ashon talks to him about his introduction to music, some of the tracks that have influenced him over the years and his new album 'Apocalypse' which is out now on Brainfeeder. Along with tracks from that album, we also hear music from Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, De La Soul, Chick Corea and Clams Casino. 

Following that, DK returns for a brief selection of tracks from George Duke RIP. His career not only produced extensive solo work, but he has also played on countless albums by other artists over the years. We hear some of his tracks from the MPS label including 'For love (I come your friend)' as covered by Thundercat, plus his work alongside David Axelrod, Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham with the track that was sampled by Souls of Mischief for '93 til infinity'.

Solid Steel (9th August) DK opens the show with the brand new Roots Manuva, followed by Massive Attack and Fadela. Then it’s Jono McCleery and Cell Broco, classic house from Curtis McClaine and Scuba. 

We welcome Trevor Jackson in the 25th Anniversary slot this week. In his own words; "This mix consists of electro/freestyle/miami bass classics & bonus beat edits by the likes of chep nunez, omar santana & the latin rascals, how they did what they did with just tape, a reel 2 reel & a razor blade still defies belief and continues to inspire me as much as it did when i first heard their work in the mid 80's . There is no tracklisting & won't be because i come from a generation when shazam. discogs, ebay & google didn't exist, when i first heard something on the radio in a club or a mixtape it often took me many months of desperate searching to find out what it was, i'm more than happy to inflict this highly satisfying laborious experience upon you, you'll appreciate it in the long run"

Solid Steel (26th July) DK opens the show this week with a heavy, heavy start with the new DJ Shadow remix of 'Eyesdontlie' for Machinedrum, followed by a forthcoming track from dBridge & Skeptical on R & S and Kalbata vs Vybz Kartel. Then it's a dancehall classic from Johnny Osbourne over the Sleng Teng riddim and new music from H-SIK and Dawn Day Night splicing up Foster Sylvers, before unleashing the sublime gospel vocals of Pastor T.L. Barrett. We also hear a track from the new Ras G album on Brainfeeder, music from our guest in Hour 2 Paul White, the soulful voice of Peven Everett and latin jazz from Roberto De La Barrera and the Alegre Allstars.

2 gigs next week, London & France Posted: 25 Jul 2013 03:38 PM PDT Two gigs back to back next weekend, Friday sees a FREE gig with DK, Jon More and Ross Allen just down the road from me in Herne Hill – should be fun. Saturday sees a return to Seignosse in France for another gig with ex-Ninja DJ Vadim, possibly the third time we’ve been billed together in the last year.

Solid Steel Radio Show 21/6/2013 Part 3 + 4 - DK + JuJu & Jordash

DK opens hour 2 with Lone (another member of Hoya Hoya) with the huge 'Airglow Fires' and a whole host of music from the Ninja stable, including Machinedrum, Thundercat on Brainfeeder, Helena Hauff on Werkdiscs, Kid A on Technicolour and the legendary Congo Natty with a forthcoming track on Big Dada. Plus classic tracks from Maxx Traxx and Gino Soccio, before closing with Hackney Colliery Band and their version of Goldie's Inner City Life.
JuJu & Jordash close the show with a weird and wonderful selection just as we like it, taking in Anandar Shankar, Cabaret Voltaire, Sun Ra and The Art Ensemble of Chicago ending a show living up to the tagline 'The Broadest Beats'.

Solid Steel (7th June) DK opens this week's show with 'Aquarius', probably the most played Boards of Canada track on Solid Steel, setting us up for the special second hour, plus Slugabed, new music from Items, a track from the Thundercat album 'Apocalypse', Scrimshire and Melodicore from the classic Leila album 'Like Weather' from 1998.
Yosi Horikawa takes over with a mix ahead of 'Vapor', his forthcoming debut album on the First Word record label. We hear two tracks from the album, plus more from Kidkanevil & Daisuke Tanabe, Jack DeJohnette, Smif-N-Wessun and Lewis McCallum.

Solid Steel Radio Show 24/5/2013 Part 3 + 4 - DK + Ghostbeard

DK follows in Hour 2 with some more recent hip hop from The Underachievers on Brainfeeder, the return of Quasimoto on Stones Throw, Paul White featuring Danny Brown and Ty with 'Let's start', plus vintage Jeru the Damaja with the classic 'Come clean'. Omar is still delivering quality soul, followed by reissued tracks from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou and Terry Garthwaite on the joint If Music and Ninja Tune compilation, before closing with King Midas Sound. 
The mighty Ghostbeard returns with another fine reggae selection, this time from Japan. With music from Ken2-D Special, Fly-T, Dry & Heavy and Sly Mongoose, it sounds like they grew up on On U Sound classics. All this plus extra vocals dropped over the mix by Yellow Mouse (aka Kiki Hitomi from King Midas Sound).

It's not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it's 25th anniversary. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums.
