A Brief History of São Paulo’s Megalopolis Rap Posted: 10 Feb 2015 08:31 AM PST It’s important to explain something: São Paulo is the largest city in South America, a megalopolis with 20 million residents that is staggering in its scope and dark, problematic beauty. It’s been compared frequently to a tropical incarnation of Blade Runner, with almost every block of the city’s centre, which goes on for miles and miles, featuring a concrete skyscraper. As regular folks sit in traffic or on buses below, São Paulo’s significant number of mega-rich zoom above them on personal helicopters, preferring not to step foot on the ground below. On the outside of the city, poor neighbourhoods go on and on, supplying the labour for the state capital, and usually, most of its cultural inspiration. It’s here that Brazilian hip hop was born and grew up. Hip hop here, both musically and culturally, has its own local features that are different from the scenes in the rest of the world — and definitely different from the culture in the US, which first inspired Brazil’s movement. "Want to come enjoy some loneliness? Come to São Paulo" On xDATE, Boiler Room is proud to present sets from 3 legends, and one up-and-comer that have one foot or the other squarely in this culture. KL Jay, the DJ behind legendary rap group Racionais MCs, still as active as ever since forming in the city’s outskirts slums in the 80s, and one of the continent’s best DJs. NUTS, another of Brazil’s most renowned DJs, represents the old guard of Brazilian diversity and tropical flavour, with a special set of Brazilian music with a hip hop touch. CIA is a founding member of rap group RZO and now traveling "vilão dos toca-discos," while Cinara is widely celebrated wunderkind and represents the new generation. The four artists mix together old standards from the Brazilian hip hop scene with new tracks from North America or Jamaica, alongside classically Brazilian genres, plus the participation of an array of São Paulo’s young rappers that perform along with KL Jay and CIA. In his unique set, meanwhile, NUTS skilfully brings to the fore his deep knowledge of classic Brazilian music and puts it all together in brand new forms, all-in-all making for 4 hours of extremely diverse sets. DJ Cia "Want to come enjoy some loneliness? Come to São Paulo," said rapper Mano Brown, of Racionais MCs once, during a free show that packed the city’s masses into its dilapidated downtown. The apparent strangeness of such a comment at such a moment tells you a lot about São Paulo. It’s gigantic, cannibalistic, and cruel, made up of migrants and immigrants, it’s where everything happens, but also a place you can get lost. That must be why those that live here have the strong sensation of being São Paulo. With so many people here from all around the country, and the world, it’s natural that the city would host a widely diverse musical culture. That’s true, but no other sonic language has been so fully realised, applied, and recontextualised to speak of this place as hip-hop.

Noisia tip their top 10 tunes of the moment Posted: 17 Jul 2014 04:00 PM PDT Last week, the release that blazed up the Beatport charts to nab the #1 spot in our Top 100 Releases (not just in their respective genre, but on the overall site), was from Noisia who're back with huge sounds on their latest release, the Purpose EP. The Dutch drum & bass trio of Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen and Thijs de Vlieger delivered eight new cuts with the production quality that many bass producers will spend an entire lifetime striving to achieve. They seemingly do it no sweat. Recently, we were graced with the unique opportunity to convene with them, between stops on their heavy tour schedule, and get a definitive list of their favorite tracks of the moment. Laraaji’s Cosmic Ambience and Stunning Beauty Posted: 27 Nov 2013 09:47 AM PST In May of 1978, Brian Eno found himself subletting a flat in Greenwich Village in what would prove to be a fertile period for the man and his music. Within the next two years, he became a staple on the downtown scene, recording no wave bands for the epochal No New York compilation and collaborating with CBGB fixture Talking Heads on a series of records that moved their sound away from punk and toward a polyrhythmic groove that would power the band on into the ’80s. But late in 1979, Eno happened upon a busker while strolling through Washington Square Park. He was sitting in the lotus position, eyes closed, lost in the waves of sound he coaxed from his zither. When Edward Larry Gordon opened his eyes, he found amid his donations Eno’s business card. He entered the studio with Eno a few months on and emerged with a new name (Laraaji), a new album (1980′s Day of Radiance, released as part of Eno’s influential Ambient series), and a new sound: his zither run through a patina of electronic effects. It was a relationship that would continue throughout that decade and into the ’90s, with Laraaji releasing a string of albums for Eno’s All Saints imprint. This music revealed a strain of New Age that could be by turns placid yet exquisitely psychedelic, mind-elevating and body-erasing. Gordon’s life, in particular, serves as a definition and counterpoint. He was born in Philadelphia, where he learned to play violin, piano and trombone; he eventually studied composition in Washington, D.C., at Howard University. After college, in the early ’70s, he relocated to New York City, where he took up stand-up comedy and acting, in addition to playing music gigs. No doubt influenced by the Eastern spiritualism infused into the late-’60s free jazz of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders that still hung in the air of the Village, Gordon began to study with gurus like Swami Satchidananda and Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati. But it was when he came upon a zither in a pawn shop that he became attuned to his musical and spiritual calling.
