Chad VanGaalen, Laura Leif and Andrea Hoff are among the 17 musicians, artists and animators who have come together to pay tribute to Calgary musician Chris Reimer, who died in 2012 at the age of 26.
Reimer (Woman, the Dodos, Azeda Booth) was a vibrant, creative force in his city's arts scene, including Calgary's Quickdraw Animation Society. Inspired by the Dodos' 2013 song, "Confidence," which was dedicated to Reimer, and feeling frustrated and saddened by the loss of their friend and collaborator, Quickdraw's members decided to work through their collective grief in the best way they knew how: by getting animated.
Dude, That's Insane: a Tribute to Chris Reimer is a wonderful short film and fitting tribute to the expansive, ragged, peculiar beauty of Reimer's short-lived genius. Each artist was given two illustrations that Reimer had created, and animated the sketches however they saw fit. The artists initially knew the frame that would lead into their piece, and the frame leading out of their piece, but would not see the full tribute until it was all complete.
Set to Reimer's unreleased ambient recordings, the whole film feels like a vivid, amorphous dream, warm and tense and gutting. Watch it over and over, because each time you'll hear something new, see something different, sink a little deeper inside a new version of the world.
The film and installation debuted at Sled Island in June, but CBC Music is proud to premiere Dude, That's Insane online for the whole world to see. You can also check out the gallery above for some stills and images from the film.
