Ottawa's the Acorn is back. It’s been five years since Rolf Klausener’s experimental folk project has released any new material, and in that time a lot has changed. Band members have broken off to do other projects — including Silkken Laumann, of which Klausener is a piece — and this recording project took a back seat.
"I wasn't ready to commit to anything, musically or otherwise. I'd lost perspective of the project's place in my life, and felt saddled to a horse I didn't recognize, or even know how to ride," he told Noisey. "By 2014, all distractions were exhausted, and so was I. So, I walked my ass to a cottage to root through four years worth of unfinished demos and make a lot of congee. I came home feeling like I was ready to reclaim my pony, even if she was called the Acorn."
The result is Vieux Loup, a spacious record of Acorn-sounding experiments. Album opener "Rapids" has a slow, soothing rhythm, over which Klausener asks, "Are you caught up in a memory, or a path to the future?" The first single, "Influence," balances folk and electronic, with Klausener’s voice leaning on the hazy, slightly impenetrable side. The title track, "Vieux Loup," begins with piano notes and an intake of breath: it’s as if he’s readying himself for the track, or this recording process in general.
Klausener is no old wolf, but he’s writing and creating from an inward place. There’s a lot to glean from that introspection.
Vieux Loup will be released May 19. Pre-order it here.
