FACT Magazine The FACT playlist: Our 10 picks of the week @ Musique Non Stop |

Every weekend we post a rundown of the music – old and new – we’ve been enjoying in our UK and US offices that week. No emphasis on the boxfresh or the under-the-radar: just an honest account of what’s spent most time on the respective office stereos, with (where possible) links to the music. Liphemra – Part 3 The debut mixtape from mysterious drummer/vocalist Liphemra is only 15 minutes long, and we’ve had it on repeat. The LA-based talent counts FlyLo as a mentor, makes left-field pop and reminds us of Karen O: “What I want to say, I’ll say, I’ll say, motherfucker, I’ll say.” Zuse – Bullet Zuse has a voice unlike anything in hip-hop, fusing the dancehall flow (and patois) of his Kingston hometown with the weirder cadences of his Atlanta base of operations. Backed by hitmakers DJ Spinz, Metro Boomin, 808 Mafia, and FKi, this one bangs. John Barera & Will Martin – ‘Awake’ A rusher and a half from Barera and Martin’s recent EP for Yen, with heavy hints of Soundstream and Bangalte. Hardly original, but if you wouldn’t give it trance hands to this after a couple of drinks you’ve officially lost your edge. Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting – In The Trauma Center Sludgy, noise-drenched Screw-influenced jams from one of Portland, Oregon’s weirdest (and most crucial) sons? You don’t have to tell us twice. Strict Face – ‘Fountains’ Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper label has been in fine form this last couple of years – ‘Quartz’, ‘Tash Wax’, The Room Where I Belong – and Australian producer Strict Face’s contribution keeps the levels high. Fans of The Room Where I Belong should be all over this, in fact – it’s got that same zero G grime feel, but replacing that EP’s minimal airlock feel with lusher strokes of colour. Perfect Pussy – Say Yes To Love Twenty minutes of noisy, cathartic punk with hints of riot grrrl that brings back memories of teenaged nights spent in dank basement clubs. Zmoney/Various – The Mobb Tape This tape might have dropped a few weeks ago but it gets better with each repeat spin. Need proof? Check out ‘Umma Dogg’ and ‘Anyway’ and then report back. Various – Bombay Disco This must-hear reissue collects late-1970s attempts to reconfigure disco for a hungry Bollywood market. The results are a demented glam-meets-disco-meets-Bollywood psychological nightmare. Todd Terje feat. Bryan Ferry – ‘Johnny and Mary’ One of the year’s most anticipated dance albums drops on Monday, and it’s, er, not that much of a dance album at all (sound familiar?), with as much chintzy piano and moustachioed lounge jazz as kick drums. This magnificent Robert Palmer cover, at the centre of the record, could’ve easily snuck onto the Drive soundtrack had it been released a few years previous. The entire PC Music discography The London-based dance-pop label caught our attention with their DISOwn mix last week, but A. G. Cook and company have been at it for over a year, churning out undeniable tracks that are the sonic equivalent of snorting Pixy Stix. |

This year, we've brought in several new weekly features to FACT's schedule. Joining My Favourite Record and Forgotten Classics is The Week's Best Vinyl Releases, a Saturday column by our friends at Soho record shop Phonica. It sounds obvious, but few people are onto great records as quickly as a great record store, and after years spent discovering gems in Phonica's end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday morning, they'll run down the five vinyl records that you should grab this week. LEGOWELT Los Alamos Motel 12″ (PPU Records) The pairing of Danny “Legowelt” Wolfers and DC vintage specialists People Potential Unlimited is a match made in synthesizer heaven. This must-buy has two cuts of interstellar house on the A-side and two downtempo dreamscapes on the B-side. Audio / Buy here OMAR-S Romancing The Stone 2×12″ (FXHE Records) The Detroit club specialist follows up last year’s world-beating Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself with a double EP that features a couple soulful stompers, a touch of acid squelch and plenty of his trademarked deep house vibes. Audio / Buy here LUKE VIBERT Ridmik LP (Hypercolour) The UK dancefloor veteran returns with his first long-player since 2009, a wide-ranging set of retro-futuristic dance tunes that is lovingly held together by his go-to tool: loads of 303 acid. Audio / Buy here GREEEN LINEZ Hibiscus Pacific EP (Alliance Upholstery) Boogie duo Green Linez (a collaboration between Chris Greenberg and A Taut Line) enlist Cali Balearic pro Sorcerer, DFA’s Jacques Renault and analogue house recluse Moon B to remix their yacht-ready ‘Hibiscus Pacific’. Is it summer yet? Audio / Buy here THE MIDNIGHT EPISODE The Midnight Episode LP (Ominra) The debut from Nicola Cunningham and Karl Skagius (and the first album on Gunnar Wendel's Ominira imprint) wanders through the darkness of classic British horror. Spooky ambience with some stunning artwork. Audio / Buy here |
