Nas to commemorate 20th anniversary of Illmatic with deluxe edition and documentary
Undisputedly one of New York’s finest exports, Nas celebrates the 20th annivesary of Illmatic this year, the classic album that helped put the East Coast back on the hip-hop map.
On April 15 he will release Illmatic XX, a double disc edition which includes a remasterd copy of the original record on one CD alongside 10 unreleased demos, freestyles and remixes. He will then take the album on tour in the US, performing it from front to back. Not shying away from the importance of the album on his career, Nas has said:
With Illmatic, I didn't think about it. I just did it. I believe everybody has good instincts. Now I'm a man from that past and I'm supremely grateful. There's a Nigerian proverb 'What is past is prologue'. I'm here today because of Illmatic.
In addition, a feature-length documentary entitled Time Is Illmatic has been made, which follows the making of Illmatic, hallmarking its social underpinnings and legacy. The tracklist for the deluxe edition is below.
