When it comes to Broadway love songs, they usually involve a man singing to a woman, or a woman singing to a man, or a man and a woman singing to each other.
But Canadian troubadour Rufus Wainwright is switching up that mix at this year's Luminato Festival in Toronto, where he is presenting an evening of man-on-man love duets — and the men include David Byrne, Boy George, Josh Groban, Brennan Hall, Glen Hansard, Steven Page and more.
Many of the songs the pairs will perform were actually crafted by gay men, among them Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Jerry Herman and Lorenz Hart. Others such as Rodgers and Hammerstein's "We Kiss in the Shadow" have long since become gay anthems.
The show is called Gentleman Prefer Broadway, and is happening at the Sony Centre for the Arts on June 14.
Wainwright is no stranger to the festival, which marked the first stop on his North American tour for his solo album All Days are Nights: Songs for Lulu, and the North American debut of his opera Prima Donna.
This year's festival also features Sleeping in the Devil's Bed: The Music of Daniel Lanois, a salute to the Canadian music mastermind that features Bill Frisell, Kevin Drew, the Handsome Family, Emmylou Harris, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Anna McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright and more.
Jason Collett is also hosting his Basement Revue, where the performers aren't announced until showtime.
And late-night revelers can also take in a Toronto Symphony concert at Roy Thomson Hall, then rub elbows with TSO musicians at a lobby after-party.
The Luminato Festival runs June 6-15. For more info, check out their website.
