The 50 greatest Canadian albums of the '90s

When we first had the idea of compiling the 50 best Canadian albums of the ’90s, we didn’t quite realize what a task it was going to be. After all, it was only 10 years.

However, there was a lot going on in Canadian music during that decade: homegrown bands were getting more airplay than ever before, thanks to the establishment of CRTC rules (which rose to 35 per cent Canadian content by the end of the decade); indie music rose to prominence; and Canadian female artists began topping the pop music charts worldwide.

All this meant that we started with a much larger list of music than we expected. Everyone who contributed had their own personal list of ’90s classics and were passionate about each choice. In the end, we decided this was about celebrating the ’90s and the music it produced, thus the list needed to be decided according to how representative each album was within the decade — and not necessarily by its stature in the Canadian music canon as a whole.

So, after much heated debate, we present you with the 50 greatest Canadian albums of the ’90s. Peruse, dispute, enjoy.
