When it comes down to utilizing jazz, I consider the United Kingdom-based producer TMCT aka TomCat to have it on lock. I am making this assumption of one the only tape I’ve heard of his, the oh so mellow SNOWBEACH Vol. 1. A risky thing to do, yes I know, but once you are submersed in it – it’s hard to deny that these songs are the some of the best jazz-infused, dusted beats you have heard in recent memory. If the sound looped lush piano, and bass licks playing along in unison isn’t enough to convince you, I don’t know what will. You can support at your own price and give TMCT’s SNOWBEACH Vol. 1 a well-deserved spin below. Please feel free to vibe to it in any way that you prefer. Buried within his Ohbliv‘s SoundCloud is a collection of unreleased beats all ripped from his large heap of cassettes hailing from ’01-’05, titled Forever Paying Dues. The set serves as a look at some of his earlier creations that were made on the SP-303. I was in for quite a surprise earlier this week when German label Radio Juicy released the sequel to Bliv’s on-going series out of nowhere. Ohbliv heads may notice a few cuts as they listen through 30 minutes of murky, lo-fi, yet-funky awesomeness such as the “gospel-driven” “Devotional 1″. Get a rare insight within one of VA’s finest vaults by checking out and downloading Foreverpayingdues 2 below. Download: Ohbliv - Foreverpayingdues 2 [SoundCloud] |

Closing out Beatles week on Letterman, Lauryn Hill took to the late night show to perform “Something”. And, for those of you who are fans of the Beatles (everyone), you are going to really appreciate this rendition. This whole promotional week is leading up to CBS’ special on the legendary UK band, The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles. That will air this Sunday at 8pm EST.

As Dilla Day continues, esteemed Jay Dee DJ and historian J. Rocc unveiled a pair of mashups he has been working on. But they aren’t just any mashups, they are Dil Jackson mashups. Yeah, if you need some help putting that together, its a combination of J Dilla and Michael Jackson. You can stream both mashups below.
In other news, Rappcats uploaded the original Thank You Jay Dee, Act 1 tribute mix, which J. Rocc dropped back in 2006 as the first episode of Stones Throw’s podcast. You can stream that at the bottom of this post. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson and J Dilla. |

Murs is perhaps one of hip-hop’s most lovable personalities. With that, he has also come up short on several of his releases over his career. And while a lot of the blame can fall directly on him, his label situation hasn’t always been favorable. He’s been on major labels, independent labels, and even dropped tunes all on his own. Today, though, he looks to find a new comfort zone, as he announces his signing to Tech N9ne’s Strange Music.
While we have yet to hear much from the new partnership, we have a feeling this is going to be a good fit. Check out the promotional video below. |

Unless this is some kind of parody, I’d have to say this song is missing the mark. But we are big fans of what Ryan Hemsworth has been up to as of late, so I think it’s fair that we document his journey as an artist. This particular 8-bit-induced song will appear on ABGOHARD’s Rich Yung Pimp mixtape, which will hopefully sound a little bit better than this song.

Danny Brown, Raekwon, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, BJ The Chicago Kid, Ab-Soul, Casey Veggies and others are expected to make the track listing.

Exile‘s production chops have been proven, that’s a fact. But not everyone is aware of his skills behind the microphone as an MC. While his rapping output has continuously increased over recent months, Exile thought it was about time he dropped a solo freestyle. And since it’s J Dilla’s birthday, the esteemed producer paid respect by dropping some rhymes on one of the late Detroit producer’s instrumentals.
The final product can be streamed below. |

After hearing the preview of “Do Girls” a few days ago, the anticipation for future Theophilus London material is building. While we have yet to hear the full audio from that track, London is taking the time to unveil a new bit of music. Using Style as his outlet, London has unveiled the title track to his forthcoming EP, which will set the tone for his full-length that is expected to drop later in the year. Stream “Take A Look” below. Take A Loop EP is set to drop Feb. 12. |
