MIXMAG MIX OF THE WEEK
TOKIMONSTA
We first got wind of Tokimonsta when excellent Brighton bass label Donky Pitch booked her for a show at The Jazz Place in 2009. She appeared alongside fellow Mixmag favourite Slugabed as well as Blue Daisy and Ghost Mutt in what was a quality showcase of the burgeoning electronic hip hop scene. Her love of colourful, glitchy, gut-punching beat music was a surefire way to grab our attention and she soon went on to become one of Los Angeles' leading experimental producers, getting involved with the Low End Theory crew and releasing on Flying Lotus'Brainfeeder.
Now it's 2013 and Tokimonsta, real name Jennifer Lee, has just released her second album viaUltra, one of America's leading EDM labels. But don't be fooled; 'Half Shadows' is the work of an artist dedicated to pursuing vivid dance music that has its roots in hip hop, electronic funk and the wide plane that is 'bass'.
With shows booked across the summer in places ranging from Montreal to Istanbul to Sydney to Taipei, it's been a bit of a touch being able to grab a mix from Tokimonsta. But here it is, a quickfire selection of party tunes and underground classics from Julio Bashmore, Kingdom, Flying Lotus, Caribou, Cajmere and Masters At Work. This one's perfect for when you need to get psyched. Enjoy...
Tokimonsta plays The Playground festival on Saturday June 8. Get tickets here
