The 10 best Canadian summer music festivals of 2015

The CBCMusic.ca Festival is almost here and that means one thing for sure: the beginning of summer festival season is upon us.

Our third annual music festival happens on May 23 in Toronto at Echo Beach this year and will feature performances from Bahamas, Patrick Watson, Joel Plaskett, Coeur de pirate, Jenn Grant, and more. If you haven't already, you should buy your tickets now.

Of course, there are also an ever-increasing number of other summer festivals with incredibly stacked lineups happening around the country, and today we're shining a spotlight on the 10 biggest can't-miss events for Canadian indie music fans (aside from our own). See our picks in the gallery above.

The playlist: electronic – Arthur Russell, CC Not, Japa Habilidoso and more

An unlikely collaboration between psyche-rock, cosmic disco and Todd Rundgren, a Swedish spin on Congolese dance music and the latest from the Arthur Russell archive

At the other end of the “2015 collaborations we expected” spectrum from Britney and Iggy is this new record, out this week on Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound. First up there’s Emil Nikolaisen, bandleader of under-appreciated psych-rock troupe Serena Maneesh. Then there’s Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, king of cosmic disco. And finally there’s Todd Rundgren, producer of everything from Meat Loaf’s operatic nonsense to XTC’s pastoral pop, not to mention 25 albums of his own material. Together they have the potential for unprecedented levels of prog, and so it proves: guitar solos pirouette around unspooling synth lines, as the repeated refrain of “put your arms around me” seems to invite chemically assisted tantric lovemaking. Track titles include Liquid Joy from the Womb of Infinity and T.H.E. Golden Triangle (Dry-Mouthed Gargoyles in a Fountain of Fluorescent Shepard Tones), and there’s even a metatextual moment on Ravende Gal (Full Circle) as the trio explain their intentions for the LP over some tribal congas. Lindstrøm gently tethers this lunging quest for the stars with a disco beat, and Rundgren and Nikolaisen’s pop smarts are still on show; at times it ends up reminiscent of Stereolab or Jaga Jazzist’s cosmopolitanism. A deliriously camp treat.

We kick off this festive Tuesday with a new weekly series from Main Course mogul Astronomar…. introducing his Horoscope Readings – each week we will giveaway a new track from the label, while Astronomar personally gives astrological readings for DJs & producers alike. Our first track is Astronomar’s rework of Armand Van Helden’s classic “Work Me! (Gadamit)” – grab it below via ToneDen and prepare to be mesmerized by your weekly horoscope reading!

Astronomar’s Horoscope Readings #1

Scorpio:
You may feel like collaborating, but finishing solo projects might be the thing that will maintain a balance in your output

Capricorn:
Be grateful.
The sting from a hair being pulled out by a wristband is a small price to pay for a night of free partying.

Libra:
Stay humble; don’t become a dick just because Skrillex played your remix at Ultra main stage.

Leo:
Take a moment to realize what side of the fence you are on.
The DJ booth if for the DJ. If you aren’t DJing or the DJ’s manager you have no business in the booth.

Aries:
Take your chances; You will never know if he’s down to repost your new track if you don’t ask him.

Cancer:
Take note of the liberties you’ve earned while social climbing ; just because you know the promoter doesn’t mean you can ask for a +4 one hour before the club opens. Thats just rude and you know better. This isn’t your first rodeo.

Aquarius:
Patience is key, people will respond to your promos.

Virgo:
Maintaining a balance is really important for you this week.
It might be a good idea to have a glass of water between every double shot of Fireball.

Pisces:
If it is uniformity you seek, maybe cutting in line because you “know the DJ” isn’t a good look. Keeping things in order will bring a certain level of peace to your life.

Taurus:
Communication is vital for you this week.
Don’t be afraid to reach out to your favorite DJs for feedback on your new track.

Gemini:
Get to know people! You don’t want to be asking yourself; “Does he really want to bootleg my track, or does he just want my stems?” The answer should be obvious if you know the person asking.

Sagittarius:
Be driven but don’t force it; asking people at the club to follow you on Soundcloud is a no-no!

Listen: Toronto’s Deebs and LA’s Jarell Perry collaborate on new Shift EP

Toronto-based producer Deebs has teamed up with LA-based musician Jarell Perry and the result is the new Shift EP, out May 18 and available for pre-order here.

The first two singles, which you can listen to below, hint at the ambitious scope of their collaboration and connection, a feat all the more impressive considering their relationship is entirely online and the two haven't yet met in person. "Giving U" is a spacious, hypnotic electro-R&B jam, while "Relapse" is urgent, thoughtful and emotional, building on the gentle repetition of Perry's plaintive and smooth line, "Darling, before you relapse."
