"This one goes out to my man the Groove Merchant, comin’ through with the beats that I’ve been searching'" – Beastie Boys' Mike D in "Professor Booty"
Michael McFadin, Ubiquity/Luv 'N Haight Records' President and founder of San Francisco's fabled Groove Merchant record shop, will bring a collection of his own funk & soul records to Rappcats for a one-day popup shop.
Saturday, August 20, 2016
Noon — 6PM
5636 York Blvd,
Los Angeles CA 90042
The boutique McFadin opened on Haight Street in early 1990 was one of the only stores of it's kind, nearly three decades ago, and it quickly earned a reputation the world over as a place to find rare records and learn about new sounds. It became a haven for collectors, DJs, and producers looking for soul, funk, jazz and break beats, and inspired the likes of the Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow and Dan the Automator to create landmark albums in the 90s. Ubiquity and Luv N’ Haight labels were founded from the San Francisco shop.

Rappcats is bringing McFadin and his records for a one day pop up shop in Highland Park, Los Angeles. Many of the records one of the best collections the funk and soul America ever saw: those of "Boston” Bob Gibson, the East Coast's digging king. Egon visited the collection shortly after McFadin bought it in 2004 and confirmed that it was peerless, full of one-off, fabled records, of all genres, but with a specific bent: heavy grooves, and raw funk. Also on sale during the pop up will be Ubiquity and Luv N' Haight titles, available at 50% off.

Bixel Boys Present BIXTAPE: Los Angeles

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Bixel Boys have been keeping busy as of late, working on new music, dominating the SoCal club circuit, and as of today, launching a new mixtape series: Bixtape. With each episode centered around the influence and products of a particular city. Starting things off, of course, is the Boys’ hometown of Los Angeles. Full of LA-based artists like Justin Jay, Shlohmo, CBG and Kendrick Lamar, the mixtape is a dope little blend of every kind of sound. The boys have a real ear for pleasing sounds, so whatever droll activity you have to go through today (which if you’re in LA is probably traffic) make sure you plug this into your speakers. Looking forward to the future cities the duo will explore in the Bixtape series, which you can keep updated on by following their Soundcloud.

Daft Punk Art Show in LA Tonight!

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Well, this is neat. Tonight our friends at SF’s Gauntlet Gallery and The Well are presenting an unbelievable curation of art inspired by the robots known as Daft Punk . Based on the initial exhibit in San Francisco last month, we hear we’re in for an amazing experience in an homage to two of dance music’s timeless artists. GDD™ DJs aRod and Burn Unit will be providing the sounds for the evening, and I’m sure there will be some kind of booze flowin’ from 7:30PM to midnight. Hope to see you there for this unique event.
