NEW RELEASES - DONALD BYRD, POLYRHYTHMICS, MED BLU MADLIB FEATURING MAYER HAWTHORNE Posted: 27 Nov 2013 12:11 PM PST DONALD BYRD - KOFI A fantastic set of tracks that was recorded at the cusp of the 70s, but which wasn't (for some strange reason) released until many years later! Donald Byrd's playing here with two different larger groups, and the music is a perfect bridge between his spacey late 60s attempts to mimic Miles Davis, and his tighter early 70s jazz funk work with Larry Mizell. The instrumentation's a bit different than usual, and includes a warm frontline of Frank Foster on tenor, Lew Tabackin on flute and tenor, and William Campbell on trombone – all working with these charts that are full and flowing – really strong, soulful elements that get some further great touches from Duke Pearson on Fender Rhodes! Rhythms echo some of Pearson's own great music of the time, with lots of Brazilian undercurrents – no surprise, given that Duke produced the record – and titles include "Kofi", "Fufu", "Perpetual Love", and "Elmina". Special limited edition also features a bonus 10" piece of vinyl – with the group's own version of Frank Foster's "Loud Minority". (Collectors edition is limited to 300 copies.)  ~  Dusty Groove

Blue Note Reissue #6: 6 new LPs ! Posted: 26 Nov 2013 06:38 AM PST Here we go with our new Blue Note reissue series! These range from the beautiful vocal album by Sheila Jordan 'Portrait of Sheila', through to classics like Dexter Gordon's 'One Flight Up' and Hank Mobley's 'No Room for Squares'. As usual, Heavenly Sweetness have also tried to reissue albums that are rarely seen on vinyl. So you can also find the second Grachan Moncur III album for Blue Note 'Some Other Stuff', impossible to find for over 20 years and the underrated Horace Parlan LP 'Happy Frame of Mind', which wasn't released until 1986. Last but not least, the late Donald Byrd's 'Kofi', a 1968 session produced by Duke Pearson and released in 1995. It is a pivotal work from his "groove period", which is available on LP and in a limited edition LP version that includes a 10" of Frank Foster's "The Loud Minority" (limited to 300 copies).

TRUMPET PLAYER ETIENNE CHARLES TO PERFORM 'CREOLE SOUL' AT SUBCULTURE NEW YORK, 11/8 Posted: 07 Nov 2013 01:16 PM PST Trumpet player Etienne Charles is a child of the world: a perfect blend of French, Spanish, English, and Dutch speaking Caribbean. He carries his bountiful influences from European classical music and Afro-Caribbean culture into his music, reflecting this mixture on his music with rhythms from jazz, reggae, Congo, and rock as well as Motown and R&B music. Born in Trinidad, he eventually made his way to NYC and graduated from the prestigious Julliard School. His new album Creole Soul has already received critical acclaim by the New York Times, JazzTimes, and Downbeat, and has hit #1 on the JazzWeek Radio Chart.
