FACT’s regular ballroom correspondent Niall Connolly, AKA CVNT TRAXXX, picks his prime cuts from 2014 and drops off his Year In Vogue mix.

Looking back now, at the end of December, 2014 has proved to be a bumper year for ballroom and vogue.
From Mike Q and the talented Qween Beat production squad’s various collabs, productions and remixes, to Jennifer Lopez’s mid-summer release ‘Tens’ featuring legendary commentator Jack Mizrahi, right up to the storming ‘Bad Bitch’ by Gage & Kevin Prodigy, which dropped only weeks ago, the scene and the sound goes from strength to strength.
Pulling in diverse influences this year from deep house, underground US club and even grime, the genre keeps beating its own path through the musical jungle of dance culture, picking up more attention and exposure as it goes. But the truth is, every year is a good year for vogue, you just have to know where to look and listen. Ballroom isn’t going away, and its history has already shown that it’s impervious to mainstream success and fickle fads. Consider it the little genre that could. With that in mind, here are my top 10 ballroom/vogue tracks of 2014 – with the exception of a mystery track that’s going to absolutely slay when it comes out next year.

For more on the evolving scene and its international offshoots, check out FACT’s essential two-part feature on The Untold Story of UK Vogue and accompanying mix, plus a guide to Qween Beat, the crew behind this year’s best ballroom mixtapes, and an interview with scene star Vjuan Allure.

Mysterious voice on Burial's Rival Dealer EP identified
Burial sampled an unlikely source.
Burial’s Rival Dealer was one of our favorite records of the year (even though it was released in late 2013), and part of its lasting appeal is the mystery behind the source of its various vocal samples (apart from that Lana Wachowski speech) and their meanings. Part of the mystery has been solved: the spoken word segments seemingly about some sort of interstellar encounter were pulled from an interview with NASA Earth Scientist Melissa Dawson
Yeah I Got tracked down Dawson and asked her about what it’s like to be sampled by Burial (and if she even knew who Burial was previous to the incident). “I'd say, if anything, Burial had a few more listeners that would not normally listen to his music,” she says, “only because my friends wanted to check it out for the first time!”
Watch the original interview below; YouTube commenters have posted timecodes (0:41, 1:29, 2:45, 2:56, 3:21, 5:28, 9:50) for the various bits of audio that Burial sampled. Interestingly, it appears that he created the haunting phrase (and track title) “come down to us” from whole cloth. Burial isn’t the only one looking to sample NASA’s archives, especially after they released high-quality sounds from space.

PJ Harvey will record her ninth album as a live exhibition at Somerset House
PJ Harvey will record her ninth album as an exhibition at Somerset House.
From January 16, visitors can watch Harvey, plus her team of session musicians, producers and the like, recording the album in 45 minute slots. As Harvey’s Facebook explains, this could entail “anything from laying down a bass drum track, to discussions, improvisation, through to full performances of new songs.”
Visitors will be watching through one-way glass, so that the musicians can focus on their work, but “>the space and the people who move through it will help to create both the process and presentation of this project.”
Tickets are available here. Slots take places at 3pm and 6pm from Tuesday to Friday, and on Saturdays at 1pm and 3pm.
Harvey’s last album was 2011′s acclaimed Let England Shake.

The real Deborah Bone was a pioneering mental health nurse born in the band’s hometown of Sheffield.
The 51-year-old had been suffering from multiple myeloma, and died on December 30, shortly before the announcement of her MBE. As well as setting up the Step2 health service for the Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust in Stevenage, she developed the Brainbox, a visual resource that helped young people cope with stress and anxiety, and helped launch the Bright Stars programme, used in primary schools across Hertfordshire.
Bone won several awards for her work in the mental health field, and wrote a book on the subject, The Sticking Plasters for Children's Souls – Stories to Improve Emotional and Mental Well-Being, which was illustrated by local children.
Bone’s mother was a close friend of Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker’s, hence her appearance in ‘Disco 2000′ – a single from the group’s 1997 album Different Class that opens with “Well we were born within one hour of each other / Our mothers said we could be sister and brother.” Cocker sung the song at her 50th birthday party last year.
