In 2010 our esteemed collaborators Adrian Quesada and Shawn Lee finally met at the SXSW festival in Austin. In 2012 they started trading ideas through the internet. Late 2013 they released the first volume of their soft psych/folk/funk/psychedelic project The Electric Peanut Butter Company which we hailed on Paris DJs as one of the best albums of the year. That first volume was called 'Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics Vol.2'. "Trans-Atlantic" is quite self-explanatory, with Adrian based in Austin, Texas and Shawn in London, UK. "Psych Classics" becomes obvious once you give the music a listen. But "Vol.2"? That was a mystery, which is soon going to be solved, since in a couple of months from now the "Vol.1" will be released!! Shawn Lee once explained that he liked to mess with people minds so it all becomes clear: it was just a matter of "let's put out vol.2 and we'll put out vol.1" later… Nothing THAT suprising considering the players involved here!! :-)

Adrian Quesada and Shawn Lee play every instruments on this, and Shawn is on vocal duties when needed. The recipe is clearly written on the back of the digipack: 35% psychedelic, 25% soul, 20% rock and 20% funk. Before even listening, it already smells tasty, doesn't it? And indeed it does, with a global psychedelic library/rock edge, as expected from the duo, after the recent 'Brown Sabbath' and Spanish Gold groovy rock-oriented projects from Adrian, and 'The Beta Club' or Tim Love Lee' collaborative projects from Shawn. Favorites include the laidback cinematic groove of 'Stealio', the more uptempo jam 'Mister Pink', the psychedelic funk drenched in analog synths and guitar from 'Austin City Limiter', or the sinister soul ballad 'Jenn Wu'.
As with the previous volume, vinyl is recommended…

Press Release :
Attracting much fanfare and garnering tons of plays by tastemakers, radio stations-in-the-know, and DJ's alike, the first Electric Peanut Butter Company album was jar-full of '60s psychedelic goodness. But guess what? The dynamic duo of Shawn Lee and Adrian Quesada are back with Vol.1 of their Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics masterpiece!

Adrian Quesada is a man on a mission! He has been killing it in both the recording studio and on the live stage. While on his Brown Sabbath (Brownout) & Spanish Gold albums/tours he found stolen moments in hotel rooms whilst on tour to send musical compadre Shawn Lee tracks for the second Electric Peanut Butter Company album entitled Trans- Atlantic Psych Classics Vol 1 !!!!!

The band of brothers created the music in the same fashion as their debut but with a noticeably fuzzier more dirtier edge. The album starts with Flexi Funk. On this track the drums were recorded straight to Flexi disc on a 1950's tube machine which sounds other worldly and crusty as f#@k!!!

Other highlights include the psych pop gem Spread The Jam which declares the duos intentions. The album has a more heavy psych vibe than it's predecessor but deftly continues a logical progression for Los Hermanos Adrian Quesada & Shawn Lee. Two of the hardest working musicians in show bidness and from the looks of it, just getting started!

Spread the jam....

After a few different releases under the Freestyle Records banner in the UK, with Frootful or Angeline Morrison (or that pretentious, insulting guy who thinks he's so big while Paris DJs is so nothing that we should be working for him for free), guitarist/composer/graphic designer Nick Radford is now presenting his new project on the other side of the Atlantic - through Ubiquity Records. Can't say that's not a good move, since we haven't heard from Freestyle Records since the autumn of 2011, while Ubiquity has kept on hitting our media/production unit with records - which resulted in remixes, collaborations, reviews, playlisting, appearances in mixes, worldwide networking, etc.!!
Anyway.
This new, British band is called The Mighty Sceptres and essentially plays 1960s soul in its most classic form. The first single, Siren Call, opens the album and you instantly understand that this record is gonna be a classy, analog, vintage affair of retro soul, funk, jazz and R&B. No new wave synths, no crashy broken beats, nothing annoyingly pseudo-hype here, we're in old school territory, with an eclectic array of authentic sounds. Passionate musicians with feeling. What else would you be asking for? Just don't trust the press release about the standout tracks, this is like a collection of singles, treasures of soul, pure songcraft from beginning to end.

Press Release :
All Hail The Mighty Sceptres! boldly announces the arrival of the band and is also the rightful title of their debut album. Nick Radford and Angeline Morrison have crafted an extraordinary collection of songs showcasing their love of all things "Soul", from funk, R&B, jazz, and doo-wop with just a bit of rock, all informed by the sound and attitude of the '60s.

Already accomplished artists in their own right and having been guests on each others records, the "magic" between Nick and Angeline is fully manifested in "The Mighty Sceptres" as Angeline describes it, "The collaborative element of 'All Hail The Mighty Sceptres' has been really inspiring. Nick and I have had the chance to focus together on writing and arranging, and though we've co-written many songs previously, this was a new level of freedom and responsibility for us".

Getting the "right sound", from the writing through to the recording, engineering, production, mixing and mastering, is of paramount importance to the music of The Mighty Sceptres. By enlisting the help of Chris Pedley (The Baker Brothers) as a producer who in turn brought in Benedic Lamdin (Nostalgia 77) to help him with the final mix of the album, they were able to achieve just that. According to Nick "I think we were all on the same page as far as 'the sound' we were after was concerned, coming from a similar place musically. From the recording (where Kryzsystof Oktalski helped out with signal chains and mic'ing things up), mixing down to tape in the remarkably well equipped Fish Market studios (using the same MCI desk Willie Mitchell used at Hi Records, and an EMT140 plate reverb, among other equipment), through to the final mastering by the well respected Lewis Hopkin; I don't think we have ever used so much authentic equipment, never mind worked with such talent, in the creation of an album!

Stand out tracks include the killer funk stomper "I Found The Letter" and the string-laden, R&B uptempo ballad "Shy As A Butterfly".

Happy holidays everyone! In the Ho Ho Ho tradition of xmas, we've just re-uploaded the first two Paris DJs xmas mixes from 2005 & 2006. Those two really fit the 'Silly, Funny, Wacky, Novelty, Glittery & Funky' baseline from the image below! Well, the 10 other xmas mixes we've published along the years mostly follow the same rules, with sometimes more accent on the soulful and the funky, and some other times more focus on the craziness. Because if xmas isn't funky then there's no point. And because it is always very crazy. Try go on shopping on those last days before december 25th and you'll see. Hence this entry, advising you to rather listen to those 12 nutsy & groovy mixes of xmas music, rather than fall for it and frenetically go buy some stupid shit manufactured in China!!
PS Please excuse us for the unpleasant appearance of some of those earlier mixes artworks, we hadn't met Ben Hito yet at the time…

After the 'Lucky Brown's Space Dream' CD/LP collection from 2011, American composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Joel Ricci a.k.a. Lucky Brown is back with a new concept: releasing a double vinyl album of deep funk tunes from different recording sessions, various incarnations of the Lucky Brown band, supposed to have been released as very limited self-pressed 45 singles. The sound is purely authentic, real and raw, dirty and soulful with a dusty vibe, just like in those Tramp Records anthologies of old school rhythm & blues, soul & funk we've been talking about those last years. We won't be able to tell you about the players/musicians, recording locations and other credits since only a CD-R version of the double LP record landed at Paris DJs, but we can tell you this is backporch laidback funky grooves that diggers are gonna hunt down in the years to come, at the opposite of the over-boring mainstream music spectrum. Pure, uncut funk & soul like the Poets Of Rhythm used to produce in their early days…

Press Release :
Mystery Road pays homage to the great unknown musicians throughout america who, with their self-produced singles, became local and regional hits just around the time that megacorporations began saturating the market and the radio with something that was less like music, and more like a product. They, with profit as their goal, turned the radio into a marketplace, and turned music lovers into consumers. In only a few generations, the violent severance of our ties to the traditions of our ancestors represents a loss of cultural heritage and has thrust us into uncharted waters - a Mystery Road.

For the last 7 years, Lucky Brown has been working with a label in Germany called Tramp. Tramp Records specializes in uncovering some of this great lost music, finding and interviewing the last living founders, and licensing the music in reprints of the 45s or for full-length compilations of never-before-heard studio material. Every other 45 released is an existing band that works within that framework. We are proud to say that Lucky Brown has a reputation worldwide for being one of the roughest.

Today, Lucky Brown, in this follow up to his first Tramp album: "Lucky Brown's Space Dream," is realizing another dream - [releasing an album in the form of a series of singles - each with it's own unique artwork, independent bands and writing and recording sessions.] {a 2 LP set} entitled Mystery Road. The different band names are not intended to mislead, different people play together in each different group. Sometimes Lucky comes in with an idea, other times the group invents the music on the spot to suit the mood. All of this, coupled with Lucky's experimental and vernacular approach toward sound recording and you start to catch the vibe of Mystery Road.
