French director Mia Hansen-Love has done something even her own producers did not believe possible; she secured the rights to three Daft Punk songs for her indie film, Eden, at a bargain price most up-and-comings artists would laugh at.

Eden, which will be in theaters in Spring 2015, covers the “rise of the French electronic-music boom in the 1990s,” a subject we all share an affinity for, telling the story of Hansen-Love’s brother, French DJ Sven Love, and his pals Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. Obviously, one major concern, when producing a film about a music scene or movement, is securing the rights to the music. In this case the score seemed impossible to clear, as the Hollywood Reporter put the rights to the three Daft Punk’s songs used, specifically “Da Funk,” which figures centrally in Eden, at a cost “in the neighborhood of $1 million.”
“Sven and I were convinced because it was a tribute to house music and because Daft Punk supported the film we would find a way to [get the music rights] for much cheaper,” Hansen-Love explains. “My producers didn’t believe us because unless the rights are negotiated beforehand you can't be sure how much it will cost.”
That lack of faith caused the filmmakers to switch producers several times, yet Hansen-Love eventually proved her hunch right, as Thomas Bangalter, one of the first people to read the film’s script, gave his blessings, granting the rights to three Daft Punk songs, for 3000 Euros (slightly more than $3700) apiece. Based upon the trailer, the songs in question appear to be “Da Funk,” “One More Time,” and the robots’ 2013 song “Within.”

Daft’s price set the ceiling for the rest of the licenses, an unforeseen benefit because, as Sven Love (who also co-wrote the film with his sister), put it, “No one was going to ask for more than Daft Punk received.”
Eden has since been acquired for distribution by Broad Green, a new company owned by billionaire hedge fund brothers, so perhaps they could have shelled out a bit more. Most importantly, however, it seems safe to assume that Daft Punk’s generosity is both testament to the strength of their relationship with their fellow ’90’s ravers and the film’s success at depicting the scene they pioneered.

Caribou Proves His Great Taste (Again) With a New Mix

Right now, Canadian maestro Dan Snaith is leading the Caribou live band around North America, hitting New York City, Miami, New Orleans, Austin and many more stops in-between. Before taking on the road, though, Snaith put together a special 47-minute DJ mixtape to accompany copies of Caribou’s new album Our Love sold through music retailer Rough Trade. This week, it’s turned up on Caribou’s official SoundCloud for us all to dive into.

As we heard on his recent Essential Mix, Snaith’s a wide-reaching selector, bringing together the likes of garage trailblazer Todd Edwards, house hero Pépé Bradock, Cómeme crew member Christian S., French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and even Lil’ Wayne in under an hour. He also finds room for handiwork under his club-focused Daphni alias.

Meanwhile, the Mano Le Tough and Tale Of Us remix of Caribou’s “Can’t Do Without You” continues to sit high on the Beatport ‘Electronica’ Top Ten. Check the Caribou website to see when the tour’s rolling into your town.

Trouw Announces last month’s lineup, and it’s amazing
Legendary Amsterdam club Trouw will close its doors on Jan. 3, 2015, sadly, but the venue has announced its December lineup, which is as stacked as you might expect. The last month includes performances by Moodymann, Seth Troxler, Simian Mobile Disco, Laurent Garnier and MCDE, Gerd Janson, Ben UFO, Joy Orbison, Jackmaster, a night with Studio Barnhus, an Ostgut Ton night, an Inntervisions night a weekend with Tom Trago, and a pretty insane NYE celebration with Talabot, MCDE and more. After sharing the first chapter of our New York City day-trip with man-of-many-projects Seth Troxler, it’s time now for part two. In this installment, Seth takes us to Butcha Sound Studios in midtown Manhattan to show how he works the machines alongside producer and engineer Phil Moffa. Inside the “laboratory,” we meet some of his secret weapons, including an Ensoniq synth (“I think they did ‘Strings Of Life’ on that”), the Revolution for those 303 workouts, and other go-to gear.

Seth’s keeping a whole lot of projects in the air right now, from his studio work (see the recent hook-up with Art Department on “Cruel Intentions”) to his suite of labels: Tuskegee Music, Play It Say It and Soft Touch. Right now, his ‘Goin’ Down Under’ tour of Australia is underway, before returning to Europe for a slot at Berlin’s hallowed Panoramabar to round out November. He’ll be back in New York on Saturday, December 6 to headline the Output main room. In the meantime, you can check out our studio visit right here.
