DJ Mr Thing on finding J.Dilla’s ‘Cold Steel’ sample Posted: 27 Jul 2014 02:49 PM PDT Love this outtake from First Word Records’ mini documentary Nothing Leaves The House. The extra footage captures DJ Mr Thing describing how, at a listening post in the Real Groovy record shop, New Zealand, he discovered the sample J.Dilla used for Phat Kat’s Cold Steel Beat. Visibily animated by the find, Mr Thing explains that he’s been sitting on the knowledge for a while and proceeds to demonstrate to an excited Eric Lau, Essa, Aly and Sri from First Word, how Dilla twisted the sounds of an unknown piece of soul into that funky Cold Steel beat.
