"My Town" is a feature wherein friends and family of Brownswood, from around the world, give us the lowdown on their home town – favourite bars, restaurants, record shops and more. Forget Time Out – this is the only city guide you need. Now we are heading down under to Auckland with Jaime Robertson to resentfully learn about this amazing place.

Party:
Ponsonby Social Club
Classic small bar/venue that delivers only 100% good music from Auckland and New Zealand’s finest selectors. Plus regular international guests. And always free entry.
Friendly service, good food from its sister Diner next door and local, located on one of AK’s best drags, Ponsonby Road.
The Turnaround
One of the city’s longest running club nights. Features regular hosts Cian, Manuel Bundy & Submariner. From day one it has supplied the new shit! Always pushing musical boundaries and always rockin the floor. Slightly less frequent these day, however whenever these powers combine it is a mighty big night!
Chill out:
Silo Park in summer
A dope little area in the downtown region call the Wynyard Quarter. In summer they have a market running every weekend with food and craft stalls plus they show a movie every fri evening projected onto the side of a giant silo. Very cool very chilled. The Silo park is also a venue for some great events like Rice and Beans, a music and food event celebrating latin culture that showcases local and international talent.
Waiheke Island
A super chilled little island getaway 35mins from downtown Auckland. The island has great vineyards and restaurants like Casita Miro, The Oyster Inn and Mudbrick.
It also has a couple of great little venues with some cool club nights. The Bay @ Matiatia wharf puts a a good spread of bass music and a wicked golden era Hip Hop night called Regulate!
But of course the best place to chill out on Waiheke is at one its many stunning beaches like Little Oneroa, Palm Beach or the impressive Onetangi beach!

Eat / Drink:

Auckland has a thriving food scene currently! Plenty of high quality places to stop in and enjoy.
Being such a multi cultural city there is international food galore!
Japanese
Fukuko on Tyler St in the Britomart area has some of the best Japanese small plates in town! The Fried Chicken and Salt and Pepper squid will blow your mind!
Mexican
Mexican Specialties is one of those ‘off the beaten track’ gems that must be hunted down! In a small unassuming block of shops in an area call Ellerslie, this little place delivers mexican street food of the highest quality! No booking and only open 10-2, thursday-saturday its tables are always packed and the queue is always out the door! The beef taco and the fish tostata are the stuff of legend!

Kiwi Style:

On a more local style, chef Al Brow opened a great little tapas style joint in downtown Auckland, just across the road from the sky tower called ‘Depot Eatery’. Simple, almost humble menu is all about flavour and showcasing our local seafood. Primarily an Oyster bar, it also has a collection of the tastiest small plates anywhere! The Snapper sliders rock!

Where is the best place to buy music?
Conch Records – Ponsonby Rd
In a tough climate for record sales, Conch is still rolling on! Established as a market stall over 13yrs ago, Conch records & Cian O’Donnell have always supplied the goods when it come to the back gold. Recently this little record store has expanded into a full bar and restaurant. It is a crucial stop for all diggers and good music appreciators alike!
Real groovy, Queen St
An auckland music buyers institution for decades, Real Grovey is still trucking on. A warehouse sized music store offering all formats including a massive vinyl section. A must for diggers!

What's the local expression/saying?
There are so many local expressions in this town it is hard to know where to start. Here are a few that will get you in with the locals:
Chur! = I think that is most excellent / Thank you very much / Cool
Choice! = I think that is also most Excellent / I thoroughly appreciate that / Better than your average
Kia Ora = Maori greeting.
Aotearoa = Local name for New Zealand.
I Recon = I agree with enthusiasm
Too Meke = I think that is great!
And not to forget that everyone in Aotearoa is your BRO, young / old, Male / female.
Sum up your town in three words…
Most liveable city
What's the best local delicacy/street food/snack?
Many are described above but i would have to recommend above all the local wine! NZ is producing some of the worlds best at present and there is always some flowing in this town! Reds from Waiheke Island. Savignon Blanc from Marlborough. Aromatics from Central Otago. Plus local crafts beers Hallertau are worth a taste too! Good times!
Who is the best local talent in your area?
The quality music coming out of these little islands lately is astonishing! An amazing year yet again! Ladi 6 released her 3rd studio album, Automatic. Produced in part by Detroit producer Waajeed with devastating consequences! Local diva Aaradhna dropped a true soul album titled Treble and Reverb, which was the album of the year! Produced with a tonne of soul by P.Money & Evan Short. Those crazy scientists from Lyall Bay, Wellington, Fat Freddys Drop, dropped a new album this year that was at their usual high standard called Blackbird. The title track being one of my tunes of the summer! And i couldn’t talk about local talent without mentioning the meteoric rise of local songstress Lorde, who, despite her sudden superstardom truly seems ike a girl with her head screwed on. Famously quoted not wanting to work with David Guetta because ‘He’s so gross”. Her tune ‘Love Club’ has been on high rotation in my sets for a while now!
