Ellie Goulding wins British Female Solo Artist award at 2014 Brits

Ellie Goulding in the Observer: 'My voice is the top thing'

Ellie Goulding has picked up the Brit award for British Female Solo Artist at this year's awards at the O2 Arena in London – despite not having released an album in the past year. The singer and songwriter recently topped the UK album charts with 2012 album Halycon some 65 weeks after its release, making it the first No 1 album of 2014.

This Brit award is Goulding's second. In 2010 she won the Critics' Choice Award at the Brits, as well as the BBC's Sound of … poll – this year, soulful singer Sam Smith also received both accolades.

She was presented with the award by Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL, taking a night off from popping up at London gig venues – though that may change as the evening progresses. "Er, Prince," she said, before pronouncing herself "genuinely in shock".

Previously, Goulding was nominated for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act at the Brits in 2011. Last autumn, her first UK No 1 single, Burn, pushed her back into the spotlight. Speaking to the Observer about Burn, she said: "I think it's a truly great song. It's a tough one, because if you have that one song that catapults you, and takes you to a level where you can perform the songs that are really true to your heart, really vulnerable, really deep, whatever – if that one song gets you to a place where you can fulfil what you want to fulfil as an artist …"
