Paris DJs Best Of 2013 Reissues

While the mainstream has become more and more insipid, nostalgia of the past has been quite a big thing once again this year. Alas many labels have ducked out of our pages in 2013. Now-Again, Numero Group, Daptone, Luaka Bop, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Light In The Attic and many many others have joined the ranks of labels who have been disappearing from the radar here… Thankfully some concerned few have been organizing the resistance in France, and we've picked a selection of the best reissues we've managed to get our hands (and ears) on this year, sent to us by the mighty Analog Africa, Barely Breaking Even, Mr. Bongo, Soundway, Tiger's Milk, Tramp, Tru Thoughts or Vampisoul labels. Here's Paris DJs' 2013 selection of 16 gems from the past in Afro, Disco, Jazz, Jungle, Latin, Soul & Reggae…

Paris DJs Best Of 2013 Reissues

(CD/2LP, Anagog Africa, 2013) info | bandcamp | juno

Andrew Jervis from Bandcamp asked us to prepare a Paris DJs 25 minutes 'Best Of 2013' mix for the end-of-the-year specials on his weekly show. So Djouls selected a few tracks that got played on repeat on Paris DJs' stereo this year, MC from Chicago RacecaR added some voiceovers introductions, and Grant Phabao mixed it as a radio show…

02. The Gene Dudley Group - The Fawcett Negotiation

03. Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra - Mazouglave

06. The Electric Peanut Butter Company - The Rain
electricpeanutbuttercompany.bandcamp.com
07. Peshay - Midnight Express
tru-thoughts.bandcamp.com
Total time : 25mn

Info :
The mix starts with a marvelous Adrian Quesada production, also playing guitar here for singer/songwriter Suzanna Choffel. We then head towards the UK and the north of London, from where's coming Gene Dudley, a deep soul and funk-obsessed 27-years old multi-instrumentalist who put out a fantastic first album on the Wah Wah 45s label this year, including at least 3 big hits. One of those is 'The Fawcett Negociation'

The upcoming Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra album is something Paris DJs has been preparing for at least a year. 'Mazouglave', picked for this mix, is an afrobeat/ psychedelic funk / blaxploitation tour de force, featuring Egypt 80 trumpet player Muyiwa Kunnuji, Cedric Ricard on sax and Franck Biyong on bass & rhythm guitar. We stay on an afro vibe with a ten-piece afro-funk-jazz band from… Sydney, Australia! The Liberators are back with a splendid anthem in the Budos Band vein, out on a strictly limited 45, or opening their new album for the Record Kicks label, recorded straight to tape and hitting quite hard!

The Cactus Channel is a 10-piece funk and soul orchestra also from Australia who've only released their second album this year, but we just never stopped playing it, since it hit the turntable. Really really great soul. Then we have the Electric Peanut Butter Company, the reunion of two of Paris DJs friends and collaborators: Adrian Quesada from Austin, Texas, and Shawn Lee from London, UK. Their album 'Trans-Atlantic Pysch Classics Vol. 2' is a gem opening with a monster single, 'The Rain', which might get stuck in your head like peanut butter on your hair if you're into those kind of practices...

We conclude with a track from drum'b'bass legend Peshay's 'Generation' album. This record is one of the surprises of the year - the good ones. The drum'n'bass legend has put out a funk, jazz, a bit tropical full-length on Tru Thoughts Recordings, proving that anything can happen in music. Some thrilling music to end this little selection.

Stay connected to Paris DJs if all goes well we'll be putting out an amazing amount of music next year, once again, and thanks to Andrew Jervis for this little spot…

Los Lobes Mambo Sapin

What happens when a Jew and a Latino walk into a recording studio at Christmas? 'Mambo Sapin' (hard to translate, as this stupid joke refers to the traditional 'O Tannenbaum' song, in French 'Mon Beau Sapin'…) is Los Lobes' Xmas anthem, inspired by the sound of Charlie Palmieri 'El Fantastico' album. The connection between the Jewish humor of Peter Ustinov's voice, the cha cha cha beat and the Christmas blend here is simply thrilling! 4Doin' the Merry' is a nice Christmas jam, featuring Grant Phabao & Captain Détendu having fun around the Christmas tree, waiting for their gifts. Full of Santa's sounds, holiday spirit and snow falls. Reindeers are everywhere!

Paris DJs Playlist November December 2013

The November/December 2013 Paris DJs Playlist :

ALBUMS :

01. Bahama Soul Club - The Cuban Tapes (CD/2LP, Buyú Records, 2013)
info | juno

"The 4th album, once again deeply drenched into latin-jazz. But this time the focus is not on the dancefloor rhythms, more on the melodies. Think Cuba. Think Jazz. It's the mid-60s. Late at night. Smoke is filling the club. A band is playing on a small scene…"

02. Bilal - A Love Surreal (CD, BBE Music, 2013)
info | juno

"Eclectic, sensual and warm 4th album from the Philadelphia singer who delivers creative and unique cosmic neo-soul/R'n'B with psychedelic soul & jazz undertones."

03. Ensemble Du Verre - The Light Gets In (CD, Compost Records, 2014)
info | juno

"We've been talking about the future soul jazz productions of Ensemble du Verre for years, and their first album for the Compost label is their most achieved work. A captivating & refrreshing breather. Lie down and enjoy."

04. Hartley and Wolfe - Bespoke Future (CD, BBE Music, 2013)
info | juno

"21st century soul at its best. Hip hop producer DJ Vadim and singer Greg Blackman are killing it on this full-length!! Sometimes buying a new album at a record store is as cool as digging some old soul gem…"

05. Illum Sphere - Ghosts Of Then And Now (CD/2LP, Ninja Tune, 2014)
info | juno

"Ryan Hunn aka Illu Sphere, from Manchester, has been releasing EPs since 2009 on Fat City, Young Turks, Pinch's Tectonic and Martyn's 3024 labels… This is is first album, electronic bass/synths music just like you heard in movies recently. Perfect androids dream music, fabulous for those who love the 'Blade Runner' vibe."

06. Kraked Unit - Casse-Tête Chinois Soundtrack (CD, Believe Recordings, 2013)
info

"Featuring Mike Ladd, Lyrics Born, Lateef, Hugh Coltman, 20syl and Gary Mudbone Cooper, it's a marvelous blend of cinematic & dramatic Soul, Hip Hop and Blues, produced by Paris DJs co-founder Loik Dury with Christophe 'Disco' Minck."

07. Kon - On My Way (CD/2LP, BBE Music, 2013)
info | juno

"After many Kon & Amir compilations and a string of edits of funk/soul classics, crate digger Kon has released a soulful house/disco/early 80s funk album with some though boogie grooves. One that's been produced with love by a DJ, for the DJs!"

08. Lee Bannon - Alternate Endings (CD/2LP, Ninja Tune, 2014)
info | juno

"After a few years deeply into hip hop and many recent Bandcamp releases, NYC-based producer Lee Bannon adds another cornerstone to the recent Jungle/Drum'n'Bass resurgence (check the Congo Natty & London Posse reviews in the april playlist), adding some atmospheric influences from L.A.'s beat scene and dubstep. Fascinating."

09. Peshay - Generation (CD, Tru Thoughts, 2013)
info | etchshop | juno

"At the opposite end of the current drum'n'bass revival, legendary producer Peshay offers an alternative, using live musicians from the German band Tounion, exploring jazz, funk, soul, early electro and latin-house realms. An edgy take on American music by an Anglo-Italian Londoner with a touch of class."

10. The Butch Cassidy Sound System - Dubs And Rarities (Digital album, Olbap Music, 2013)
info | bandcamp

"This collection of new dubs, unreleased dubs and deleted vinyl only b-sides, following up on the 'Echo Tone Defeat' album release last year is a must-have for all fans of Lee Perry and King Tubby. Olympic games of 21st century roots reggae production might see Grant Phabao, Ticklah and the Butch Cassidy Sound System on the podium!"

11. The Last Skeptik - Thanks For Trying (CD, BBE Music, 2013)
info | juno

"A mostly instrumental soulful hip hop album filled with experimental explorations in chillout melancholia, orchestral arrangements and cinematic sounds. Dope from start to finish."

SINGLES :

12. Funky Mama - Funky Mama EP (12"/CD EP, Goodfellas, 2013)

13. Grant Phabao presents Echo Minott - Push It (Digital Single, Paris DJs, 2013)
info | bandcamp | junodownload

"Real Reggae music never ages. So when you put Grant Phabao, one of the rare dominant producers of this era of Reggae music, and Echo Minott, a Jamaican singer in love with a girl so beautiful, you unavoidably get a timeless Reggae love song."

14. Grant Phabao presents The Jays - Agatha (Digital Single, Paris DJs, 2013)
info | bandcamp | junodownload

"While still shining a bright light on the traditional roots reggae sound of 70s Jamaica, with a Rockers, stomping, Roots Reggae original version that's gonna bring a BIG smile to one foot jumpers in the dancehalls, French producer Grant Phabao keeps on twisting the Caribbean Island vibe with a Heavy Rock remix for all the bluesy bourbon-drinking heads out there, holding The Jays as fresh as ever!!"

15. Grant Phabao - Reggae Reworks Vol.1 - Masters Of Soul (Digital Single, Paris DJs, 2013)
info | bandcamp

"Always celebrating the end of the year with xmas mixes, best-of lists and gifts, Paris DJs has prepared a series of free EPs, gathering the best reggae reworks that have been offered on their Virtual Releases podcast in high-quality audio, starting with a 'Masters Of Soul' selection of heavyweight legends: Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, Michael Jackson and Ce-Lo Green."

16. GUYNAMUKAT vs EUFORQUESTRA - Ogun EP (12", Mukatsuku Records, 2013)
info | juno

"Eufórquestra is an eclectic world-beat ensemble from Iowa City, IA, who released in 2006 a superb album 'Explorations In Afrobeat', a fusion of Nigerian and Cuban music rooted in Yoruba tradition. Their banger track 'Ogun' gets re-issued it in 3 different, re-edited versions, a dramatically shortened edit, focusing on global dancefloor efficiency, an afro disco version, for those into alittle bit more housey world grooves, and a dubbed-out, more minimal disco version. A blast of an EP!!"

17. Harleighblu - Let Me Be (Digital Single, Tru Thoughts, 2013)
info | juno | etchshop

"This second single from Nottingham's Rn'B/soul singer Harleighblu superb album 'Forget Me Not' sounds as if Portishead were tackling soul. Nuff' said!"

18. Howeefeel - People Of The World (Limited 7", Family Groove, 2013)
info | juno

"Wanna feel good with some new old stuff? Here's a 1977 previously unreleased soul gem with a massive drum break from Chicago's Davis Import, in their earlier incarnation as Howeefeel."

19. MUKAT EDITS - Vol.4 Tropical Funk 45 (Limited 7", Mukat Edits, 2013)
info | juno

"Act fast if you want to grab one of those beauties! A-side is an edit of the people's Calypsonian Brother Valentino and his 1980 Carribbean afro-disco bomb 'Ah Wo (Brand New Revolution)', focusing on the instrumental parts of the original, the groovy breaks and solos, leaving the crusty cheese of the original vocals on the side, making it an even more potent dancefloor weapon."

20. Popsanova - Não Vem Que Nem Tem (Digital Single, Jewpop Records, 2013)
info | bandcamp | junodownload

"Here's the first Popsanova track, some kind of 'homenagem' to Wilson Simonal, Brigitte Bardot, and Marcel Zanini's moustache! Expect sexy Parisian girls moaning as the lead female vocalist Désirée Lachose sings the original lyrics, backed by Captain Détendu's band. Enjoy three versions: Grant Phabao fabulous Kingston's touch under The Mighty Blunts guise, David°F kinky Jerk mood, or The Joslyns' Tropical Pop. As would Wilson Simonal say: Alegria, Alegria!!!"

21. Wilson Legendre - Soca Music (Limited 10", Out There Records, 2013)
info | juno

"Originally released on seven inch in 1979 on Semp Records, the deeply funky cosmic afro Caribbean disco of Wilson Legendre's 'Soca Music' gets reissued by Belgium label Out There Records."

COMPILATIONS :

22. Five Years Büro.9 Music - a Label Compilation 2009-2014 (CD, Büro.9 Music, 2014)
info | bandcamp | juno

"This indie label from Cologne has been one of the discoveries of the year for us, this best-of & unreleased selection of their first five years of activity. Covering the soul, reggae, hip hop, jazz and latin spectrum with a lot of humor in the choice of covers (here: The Cure, AC/DC or some German pop…) and a knack for pop production without clichés, we can only expect 5 more years of great tunes coming from Thomas Berghaus aka Shareholder Tom's Büro.9 Music!"

23. John Morales - The M+M Mixes Vol.3 (3CD/2x2LP, BBE Music, 2013)
info | juno

"Two years in the making, this greatly mastered collection of floorfillers clearly aims for the dancefloor with superb extended re-arrangements by legendary New York disco DJ John Morales. All DJs should find some tasty stuff to play in their sets in this huge amount of definitive versions of many well known club classics from the 70s and the early 80s. Essential for the funky dance music lovers!"

24. John Morales - The M+M Mixes, Vol.3 Instrumentals (2CD, BBE Music, 2013)
info | juno

"Maybe even better for all the sound lovers out there is the instrumental remixes version. Who's ever heard those kinds of dubs with THAT sound before? A delight to investigate, revealing its subtleties slowly but surely in an hypnotic cosmic disco way. John Morales creatively focuses on everything but the original songs themselves, making this collection a spellbinding experience."

25. Santa's Soul & Funk Christmas Party Vol.2 (CD/LP, Tramp Records, 2013)
info | juno | bandcamp

"Two years ago Tramp Records released the 'Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party' compilation. Honestly we never expected a second volume. Jan Kohlmeyer, however, did an amazing job and comes up with an even more exciting selection on this second part. And to top it all, he also cooked two new mixes to share some holiday love…"

Always celebrating the end of the year with xmas mixes, best-of lists and gifts, Paris DJs has prepared a series of free EPs, gathering the best reggae reworks that have been offered on their Virtual Releases podcast in high-quality audio, starting with a 'Masters Of Soul' selection of heavyweight legends: Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, Michael Jackson and Ce-Lo Green. The EP is strictly limited to 1000 downloads, so act fast or go hunting the p2p networks later...

Stevie Wonder's magic voice on Grant Phabao's 'new vintage' 70s reggae production works so well it's reggae soul at its best! Listen to 'Uptight' and let us know if everything's alright…

We then head towards th P-Funk galaxy, and George Clinton's 'U Ain't Runnin Shit' from his 'How Late Do U Have 2b B4 Ur Absent' album, skanked by Grant Phabao into a sunshine piece of psychadelicreggaesoulthang. A remix fully approved by the Dr. Funkenstein himself.

Another great Master of Soul is of course Michael Jackson, who's second single on Motown Records from way back in 1972, a pop/R&B cover of a fifties song by Bobby Day, 'Rockin Robin', gets the Grant Phabao treatment so that it's the dancehalls MJ is now rockin'!

Last on this EP but not least, Cee-Lo Green is also one highly-esteemed soul singers, even if his career is still young and if he's been kinda heading towards shiny pop territories these days. His 2004 single 'The One' was one hell of a soulful hip hop song, dressed here in classy reggae stylings by the one and only Grant Phabao

Bahama Soul Club The Cuban Tapes

Oliver Belz , from Germany, runs many Afro-Latin-Jazz projects. The Juju Orchestra, Kojato and The Afro Latin Cougaritas, and, the one we're interested by here, The Bahama Soul Club. The BSC have released a first album in 2008, 'Rhythm Is What Makes Jazz', followed in 2010 by 'Bossa Nova Just Smells Funky' and its remix companion the following year. 'The Cuban Tapes' is the 4th one, once again deeply drenched into latin-jazz. But this time the focus is not on the dancefloor rhythms, more on the melodies. Think Cuba. Think Jazz. It's the mid-60s. Late at night. Smoke is filling the club. A band is playing on a small scene… The overhall vibe is Blue, just like the album's cover. Featuring modern day Cuban vocalists Telmary, Danay Suarez and Arema Arega, along with major artists Bessie Smith, Spanky Wilson or Ruthie Foster, this trip into the past sounds as modern as you'd expect from the Bahama Soul Club, filled with bangers and lounge beauties. Inspired 'I Am Cuba", the 1960s cult movie by Mikhail Kalatozov, The Cuban Tapes is the most accomplished yet from the German club jazz outfit. A full-length delightfully available on double vinyl…

Press Release :
Darker, deeper a bit more mystic than what you probably expected from The Bahama Soul Club. Alluring Tiki blended through Jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythms and instrumentation, environmental sounds and lush romatic themes and not without a twinkled eye for the Exotica genre. "Sure everything is based on Bahama Soul-ish kind of established and reknown rhythm and sound, but this time we spotted more on the composition with more harmonies and a soft spot on fine melodies. If you try to visualize a splendid Jazzband in a cuban night club in the mid 60s. Then you probably got it." Indeed the work on this album was deeply inspired by the breathtaking pictures of the most deliriously beautiful films ever made: "I Am Cuba", directed 1964 by Mikhail Kalatozov and presented in the 90s by Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese. The rights owners of this film ‚The Cuban Institute Of Cinematography totally fell in love with the first songs for this album and also with the idea to combine the footage with the music. They finally agreed to several scenes for a couple of videos to support "The Cuban Tapes" with pure genuine cuban patina. The first video is a trailer featuring the opening song "Ay Jona".

"The Cuban Tapes" consists of 17 tracks of finest Club Jazz and again with handselected vocal features like some of the most announced artists of the contemporary Cuban Music Scene: DANAY SUAREZ, AREMA AREGA & TELMARY DIAZ. A grandiose trio which was also selected by Gilles Peterson for his terrific, HAVANA CULTURA' project.

As if this weren't enough we're more than proud to announce three generations of distinguished American singers from past until now, starting with Jazz and Gospel legend BESSIE SMITH, Soul and Funk diva SPANKY WILSON and the Grammy nominated "Soul and Blues Powerhouse" RUTHIE FOSTER. Finally on top of that the wonderful ANNA LUCA from mighty Club Des Belugas. By the way, cool remixes from CLUB DES BELU GAS, from Italian shooting star SUOHNO and from French Swingmaster GRANT LAZLO as bonus tracks.

Biography :
The Bahama Soul Club are a German-based group whose unique blend of soul, jazz, funk, blues, bossa nova, afro and Caribbean influences has firmly put them on the map of the black music scene as one of the most exciting contemporary outfits.

The band led by Oliver Belz started in 2005 under the former name of The Juju Orchestra . The first 45 double-sider was "Kind Of Latin Rhythm" / "Funky Nassau" released in 2006, which became a huge worldwide success, going straight to N.1 on the German Club Charts and staying there for more than 12 weeks. The following album "Bossa Nova Is Not A Crime" was released in 2007 with guest vocals from soul-jazz crooner Terry Callier , Carolyn Leonhart , from Steely Dan and the lovely Katia B from Sao Paulo, whose cut became a smash hit in the worldwide club jazz scene and again reached the official media control Jazz Charts #2.

In 2008 for legal reasons the band's name was changed to Bahama Soul Club and their first album "Rhythm Is What Makes Jazz Jazz" was released, amazingly following up on the outstanding success of The Juju Orchestra . They definitely hit the mark once again with the incredible appearance of guests like french chanteuse Isabelle Antena from Nouvelle Vague and Mrs. Pat Appleton from DePhazz , with whom they also established a 9-piece live orchestra and played all the famous jazz festivals in Germany and many more elsewhere in Europe.

2010 marks the release of the second Bahama Soul Club album, "Bossa Nova Just Smells Funky" with guest singers Xantoné Blacq from Amy Winehouse Band , British shooting star John Turrell , Kojato and again Pat Appleton , just to name a few. It soon became the band's biggest success with radio features on ALL german public radio stations and countless "CD of the month" / "Album of the year" features worldwide, along with many Chart entries. With this album BSC became one of the most important contemporary European Jazz projects and were finally invited to the big German Groove Festival in Sao Paulo/Brazil.

2013 sees the band release their third album, "The Cuban Tapes" , an exotic blend of Cuban rhythms and tropical flavors executed with the trademark Bahama Soul Club style. This full-length once again features a host of talented vocal guests such as Danay Suarez , Arema Arega & Telmary Diaz from the contemporary Cuban scene, 3 generations of american soul singers Bessie Smith , Spanky Wilson and Ruthie Foster , and Anna Luca from Club Des Belugas . With "The Cuban Tapes" there is no doubt Bahama Soul Club are officially claiming their rightful spot at the forefront of the club jazz scene for many years to come!

The difference between BSC and other Nu-funk, Latin-Jazz,or Bossa projects? Bahama Soul Club is better! Simply put, it's an original combination of afrolicious Bossa-Jazz with 60s Soul and 70s Funk. The positive vibes and contagious rhythms transcend boundaries, language and race, for a timeless sound that nobody can resist!

Wilson Legendre Soca Music

Originally released on seven inch in 1979 on Semp Records, the deeply funky cosmic afro Caribbean disco of Wilson Legendre's 'Soca Music' gets reissued by Belgium label Out There Records. After the cosmic island afro disco of African 1980 released the previous year (played by Anthony Joseph in his september 2011 mix), this is another gem to hunt, the kind of perfect thing for a 'Cosmic Tropical Disco' selection, on a hand-painted, numbered 10 inch limited to 350 copies only! On the b-side, a rare piece of parang, traditional Trinidian music perfomed around christmas. This one's totally frantic at 140 bpm, while soundtrack-ish like sped-up Tarantino music.
Mesmerizing psychedelic music.

350 10" available only. Handpainted, numbered and tittypressed!

Wilson Le Gendre - "Soca Music" - unique psychedelic Trinidad disco, produced by Carl "Beaver" Henderson the man who later became responsible for producing the first real soca records.

La Familia Sen - "Angelo" - hailing from Trinidad, the genre is called Parang, it is a music that is made around Christmas only. This record is a particularly HEAVY 140 bpm affair with loud claves, frantic driving mariachi guitars and the melancholic voices of the Sen family wondering about their lost brother/son.

Nik Weston presents GUYNAMUKAT vs Euforquestra Ogun EP

Eufórquestra is an eclectic world-beat ensemble from Iowa City, IA, who released in 2006 a superb album 'Explorations In Afrobeat', a fusion of Nigerian and Cuban music rooted in Yoruba tradition, featured on Paris DJs at the time of its release. The following year Paris DJs even played their banger track 'Ogun' in an Afro mix called 'African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.6'. Well without wanting to sound pretentious, at Paris DJs we've always had years of advance on the rest of the music world here in Europe (since 1996!!), so a few years later, when Nik Weston from Mukatsuku Records stumbled upon this hidden gem, licensed it, and re-issued it in 3 different, re-edited versions, we could only applaud because this track never existed on vinyl before… First one is a dramatically shortened edit, focusing on global dancefloor efficiency, second one is an afro disco version, for those into alittle bit more housey world grooves, and third one is a dubbed-out, more minimal disco version. A blast of an EP!!

Juno Review :
Mukatsuku head honcho heard the 'Ogun' track from Iowa City outfit Euforquestra (pronounced: yoo FOHR keh struh, think Euphoria+Orchestra), on youtube several years ago bizarrely accompanying a 70's soul train video. After contacting the label and securing a license the production team of GUYNAMUKAT (Guynamite & Nik Weston) finally set about with their own interpretation. For those who had perhaps fallen in love with the GUYNAMUKAT versions of the best selling afro beat monster featuring Kaleta on the label (MUKAT 014) a couple of years ago this picks up where that left off. Three versions are included here of Ogun… a dramatically shortened re-edit, an afro disco version plus a dubbed out more minimal disco version to delight your dance floor! Strictly limited 180 gram vinyl only. As played/supported by Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music), Patrick Forge, Sleazy McQueen, Discopatrick, Nick Record Kicks, Dom Servini, etc.

Mukat Edits Vol 4 Tropical Funk 45

This is the fourth in the series of 'Mukat Edits' releases after 'Afro Disco Boogie Edits Vol.1', described as pure tropical dancefloor gold in the november 2012 playlist; 'Afro Disco Boogie Edits Vol.2', featuring irresistible bouncing boogie, serious digging and the electro-funk side of disco, as seen in the april 2013 playlist; and 'Afro Disco Boogie Edits Vol.3', floorfiller material for sure as described in september 2013 playlist. This time it's not a 12 inch but a 7 inch, limited to just 350 copies, hand numbered & hand stamped… and it's already been released for a month so you gotta act fast if you want to grab one of those beauties! A-side is an edit of the people's Calypsonian Brother Valentino and his 1980 Carribbean afro-disco bomb 'Ah Wo (Brand New Revolution)', focusing on the instrumental parts of the original, the groovy breaks and solos, leaving the crusty cheese of the original vocals on the side, making it an even more potent dancefloor weapon. B-side is some cinematic, breaks-heavy, tropical thriller funk that I can't pinpoint but which doesn't make this 7 inch less recommended!

Juno Review :
It's another ridiculously collectable addition to the Mukat series. Hand numbered of just 350 copies & hand stamped these cats dig deep again & this needs your attention before it sells out. "Tropical Calypso" is a sunkissed funk groove showdown with shimmers of highlife, woozy horns and delicate pianos while the latin floor filler "The Sting Of Skorpion" rides roughshod on an instantly distinctive horn hook and a mesmerising drum work out. Both are, as you'd expect, stunning. As charted /played by Eddie C, Suonho, Red Greg, Adesse Versions, Lefto, Diesler, Dom Servini, Ashley Beedle, Nicola Conte and more !

Two years ago Tramp Records released the 'Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party' compilation. Honestly we never expected a second volume. Jan Kohlmeyer, however, did an amazing job and comes up with an even more exciting selection on this second part. And to top it all, he also cooked two new mixes to share some holiday love, available later on this week for the first one, and next week for the second one. They'll go along nicely with the mix he did for Paris DJs two years ago, in our Xmas Mixes section!

Press Release :
To be honest, Christmas music on earthly radio seems to be the worst in the Milky Way. Just imagine an alien picking up our radio waves on his journey through the galaxy – what would he think of our conception of Christmas music? Having such an impression of our cultural heritage, would he land on planet earth at all? Being extraordinarily tolerant and broad-minded, Paul did - and luckily, I got to meet him.

Paul admits – unlike other extraterrestrials – that the human race might be able to survive on its own. This makes me appreciate him more than other aliens. And when it comes to exceptional musical taste, Paul and I have even more in common. In the past centuries, Paul has celebrated innumerable Christmas seasons across the universe. Of all things, this year it is planet earth that has something seasonal to offer - something the galaxy has never seen before. Yuletide nerd Jan Kohlmeyer has put together an amazing collection of hip-shaking Christmas songs. Despite Paul's advanced age and wealth of experience, he has never encountered such an impressive selection. Not in the entire universe.

Asking Paul about this compilation puts a big smile on his face: Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party Vol. 2 is simply intergalactic! There is no better instruction manual for decorating the Christmas tree (Little Jimmy Thomas - Deck the Halls). It is a most righteous accompaniment to seeing the first snowflakes dancing through the air (Tina Roberts – Snow). Galactic garden gnomes will surely have a fling to Pearl Bailey's Jingle Bells Cha Cha Cha, and all Martians will be snapping their fingers to Gee Whiz, it's Christmas. At his 874th anniversary this December, Paul's grandad will get up and boogie to Martin Mull's Santafly just like Christopher Walken did in Weapon of Choice. Fortunately, Paul realised how crackbrained it is to celebrate Christmas without his beloved (Jimmy Jones & his Versatiles – Christmas is a drag without you baby), so he split to be back home in time and left me to pass on this farewell: Merry Christmas everybody!

Press Release :

Miley Cyrus.

Masstropicas releases official reissues and archival finds of Peruvian music from the 60s and 70s. The label is run out of Pittsfield, MA and distributed by Light In The Attic out of Portland, OR. We had the chance to discuss with the label founder, Mike P., who cooked a special mix for us, and answered a few questions about each of his releases….

Masstropicas Discography

2008 TROPIC 01 - What's up with 'Cumbia Delincuencial', a limited numbered edition 7 inch of Peruvian band Los Chapillacs? You decided to start your 'reissued and archival' label with some 'modern psychedelic cumbia' or what?
"Yes, I first saw a photo of the band playing and said 'I need to hear them' and they were great! The 7 inch was to help them break ground outside of Peru and what better way to do it than on 45. From what I'm told it's the first cumbia from Peru released on vinyl in 25-30 years."

2009 TROPIC 02 - What's up with 'Vacation 1', a limited edition grey marbled vinyl LP from the distortion-centric duo Green Mansions ‎you started with a guy from Denmark?
"Green Mansions is a multi-media project with Peter Bonneman from Denmark, we have tons of material recorded that is soon to be released. That 12 inch was limited to 150 copies and handed out to friends, we also have a lathe-cut 7 inch with a cover of Rising Tides 'TAKE THE WORLD AS IT COMES'. We will soon tour the US and Scandinavia along with a movie we are working on."

2010 TROPIC 03 - What's up with 'El Espectacular Sonido De Carlos Antonio', a cassette release from a Peruvian one man band you recorded in Lima?!
"That cassette was recorded on my 2nd trip to Peru. I had seen a photo of him that limafotolibre.com took and went and watched him play. I recorded him on a digi-hand recorder. I have over an hour of unreleased material, I hope to see him again soon."

'2011 TROPIC 04 - What's up with up with Ranil's Jungle Party', the compilation from Ranil Y Su Conjunto Tropical released on a limited LP (100 copies)? Was that the real beginning of your journey into 1970s Peru?
"That is a collaboration with La Cumbia de Mis Viejos which was the very first re-issue project I did. I think that LP came out very solid and Ranil was also just as pleased. It opened up the doors for Masstropicas as a re-issue label."

2011 TROPIC 05/06 - What's up with up with 'El Sonido De Tupac Amaru' old school Peruvian cumbia compilation released as a limited LP and bonus 7 inch?
"That compilation was planned long before Ranil's Jungle Party was ever planned. I heard most of those songs on an amazing radio station called Radio Comas in the area of Lima where my family lives. The main strip is called Tupac Amaru which I thought was amazing. It took 3 years to produce that LP. The Centeno 7" that comes with it contains 4 different songs sung by Carlos Ramirez who has been in at least 20 different bands."

2011 TROPIC 07 ‎– What's up with up with 'El Destape', a limited edition re-release of 1974 Peruvian Cumbia LP from Grupo 2000?
"El Destape is truly a lost gem, written and recorded in the span of year in 1973. Sad to say the master tapes were a wreck and had to be re-worked on two times before we received the sound we wanted. Tulio Trigoso the founder of the band still plays to this day as well in Sonido 2000 de Tarapoto, check out video's on Youtube."

2012 TROPIC 08 - What's up with up with the 'Cantos Icaros' 100 copies cassette release? Shamanic music from the Peruvian forest?
"Placido the bass player and band leader of Sensacion Shipibo let us record him singing those songs but said it was only for personal use. He ran into some problems with his home so I released it to raise a little money to help him out."

2012 TROPIC 09/10 - What's up with 'Los Creadores Del Sonido De La Carretera Central', a 500 copies LP and 45 release from Los Jharis De Ñaña? Once again a one-time pressing only?
"Los Jharis may be one of my favorite groups from Peru, they defined a rawer sound on so many young groups in the '80s the same way Los Destellos did for Peruvian cumbia in general in the '70s. The 45 is from an amazing group from Pucallpa who play a style all their own called cumbia-MASHA. Masha being the music of the Shipbo Indians."

2012 TROPIC 11 - What's up with 'Cocinando', a reissue of a great 1970s Peru lost LP from Martin López Y Sus Estrellas?
"Martin Lopez sand in Grupo Naranja and I met up with him to interview him and he handed me a CDR of this. I had never seen it before or heard it. It is a very historic record based on the fact that it had the MAG all-stars playing on it but was shelved due to its late release in '71. They had started recording it in '69 but was not finished until '70 due to it being a studio only production, band members kept switching."

2013 TROPIC 12 - What's up with 'El Sonido De La Carretera Central', a LP compilation from composer/arranger Teo Laura Amao? Still strictly limited to 500 copies, no repress?
"That is the release I'm most proud of… It took 4 years to make, Teo Laura and the bands he played in have the hardest sound when it comes to cumbia in Peru. That record is culled from various 45s, LPs and cassettes. Limafotolibe's design work on that is extraordinary. 500 copies only, no repress. Get it or miss it."

2013/2014 - What's next for Masstropicas?
"I'm taking a break but I'm slowly working on another release with Teo Laura and Los Jharis. It's most likely going to be a 7 inch EP with 4 songs. Thanks for the interview."

Biography :
The JUNGLE FIRE sound digs deep into afro/latin funk with an approach that is both authentic and highly  explosive! Comprised of musicians from the Los Angeles region, JUNGLE FIRE pulls it's influences from  such legends as Ray Camacho, Enrique Lynch, Ray Barretto, James Brown, Fela Kuti and Manu  Dibango (just to name a few) to create a melting pot of afro-cuban rhythms, break-beats and 70′s inspired funk.

Originally conceived as a one-off project back in 2011, JF quickly gained attention and thus proved its place among the thriving LA funk/soul scene by lighting up local clubs, venues and underground wherehouse parties. The buzz grew and word of mouth spread eventually linking up the band with the indie Ohio-based label Colemine Records to cut their first 7" single "Comencemos" (a cover of Fela's  "Let's Start"). Lauded by DJ's, radio stations, tastemakers and rabid funk fans across the globe "Comencemos" sold out internationally paving the way for the second 7" Colemine release "Firewalker". A  full length LP is currently in the works.

"Few bands live up to their name in the way Jungle Fire do; fusing Cumbia, Afrobeat and trad funk, each JF jam blazes the floor with real power" as described by Juno Records UK, best sums up the Jungle Fire live show. Serving up a healthy dose of originals and deep latin/afro funk covers all cooked up together in a live mixtape style set ensuring an energy that is nothing short of fire. Although the members of JF all have diverse musical backgrounds the band as a whole is a direct reflection of the culture and musical landscape of Los Angeles, which has been the biggest influence behind the sound and flavor that is uniquely Jungle Fire.

Since their inception Jungle Fire has played an impressive amount of club dates and festivals having shared the stage with Shuggi Otis, The Blackbyrds, Lee Fields, Charles Wright, The Budos Band and even performing for Los Angeles' recent mayoral inauguration. Individually and collectively, JF's musicians have recorded, toured or played with Stevie Wonder, Breakestra, Ozomatli, Ethio Cali, Quantic, Alice Russell, De La Soul, La Santa Cecilia, Simple Citizens, Del The Funky Homosapien, Celia Cruz, Orgone, The Greyboy Allstars, The Lions and Big Daddy Kane.

Popsanova Nem Vem Que Nao Tem

Wilson Simonal's 'Nem Vem Que Nao Tem' is undoubtedly one of the most soulful brazilian anthem of the 60s. Backed by the fabulous Som Tres band (feat. pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano), the hugely popular Rio singer got a smash hit highlighted by the amazing mix of his lazy sexy vocals with the funky Som Tres groove.

The song, released in 1967 in the Odeon album 'Alegria, Alegria!!!' will be recorded 2 years later in France by Marcel Zanini, a French jazz musician. Much more familiar with Sidney Bechet and Lester Young sounds, this guy got a n°1 hit with a stupid lyrics adaptation, 'Tu veux, tu veux pas' ('Would you have sex with me, or not ?').

As the french "icône" Brigitte Bardot did her own version too, the definitive Rio-Paris sexy connexion was here to stay. 43 years later, here's the first Popsanova track, some kind of "homenagem" to Simonal, BB, and Marcel Zanini's moustache!

Expect sexy Parisian girls moaning as the lead female vocalist Désirée Lachose sings the original lyrics, backed by Captain Détendu's band. Enjoy three versions: Grant Phabao fabulous Kingston's touch under The Mighty Blunts guise, David°F kinky Jerk mood, or The Joslyns' Tropical Pop. As would Wilson Simonal say: Alegria, Alegria!!!

Grant Phabao Echo Minott Push It

Real Reggae music never ages. So when you put Grant Phabao, one of the rare dominant producers of this era of Reggae music, and Echo Minott, a Jamaican singer in love with a girl so beautiful, you unavoidably get a timeless Reggae love song. 'Push It' is one of those, with its proper, straight forward lyrics and a wicked riddim, extended to the disco version as it should. This tune is truly something to be proud of if you enjoy modern Reggae, because in every way it's just as good as anything you're likely to find in any other era of the music. Press Release :
Real Reggae music never ages. So when you put Grant Phabao, one of the rare dominant producers of this era of Reggae music, and Echo Minott, a Jamaican singer in love with a girl so beautiful, you unavoidably get a timeless Reggae love song. 'Push It' is one of those, with its proper, straight forward lyrics and a wicked riddim, extended to the disco version as it should. This tune is truly something to be proud of if you enjoy modern Reggae, because in every way it's just as good as anything you're likely to find in any other era of the music. A timeless a vibe, downright dazzling.

Echo Minott is a veteran singer, among the first ones who introduced Raggamuffin into Jamaica and the rest of the world, a pioneer on the Dancehall scene with his incomparable voice. His first break came in 1980 when he recorded the album 'Youthman Vibration' for legendary producer Prince Jammy at the age of 17 years. ‫In 1985 Echo finally became an international reggae star with the monster hit 'Lazy‬Body', released on the Black Scorpio label. It was a number one all over the reggae world. Celebrated over twenty years as a successful reggae artist, Echo Minott is now back with amazing new recordings for the Paris DJs label with producer Grant Phabao… the in-house Paris DJs sound engineer and producer. After four reggae albums with Jamaican legends, dozens of heavy-hitting remixes and singles, and a spot at the Glastonbury Festival last june, Grant Phabao took a well-deserved summer break before coming back to the airwaves with a new series of weekly releases programmed to last until the end of the year - at least! Radio host Craig Charles on BBC6 claims he's a genius and he'll be back soon with a compilation of reggae productions 'Dis Is Reggae Soul' and the long-awaited 'Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra' album...
