We chat with MadTech Records and Walter Ego about Food, Raves, the Creative Process, and more…

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Walter Ego’s new EP on MadTech, the Heaven EP, is out next week on August 5th, and it’s house-y garage-y goodness. The title track opens up the EP is soulful and warm, big garage vibes, bubbly pads, and soft organs in the background. It has a nice little shift towards the end, sharper drums and slightly more aggressive pads take it to an interesting new level. ‘Grab Somebody’ is a little bit more energetic, the combination of jazz-influenced hi hats and cuts of acid with what could almost be a xylophone on the chord progression deliver a fascinating and danceable house tune. The last track Jam Roll (For Love) takes things to a deeper and darker place, much more moody synths and pulsating bass. All three are solid in their own right, MadTech really nailed the choices, making the Heaven EP a memorable listen and a great asset for many a variety of DJ crates.

[VIDEO] An Insightful Mini-Doc on Party Photography — No Credentials

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Our friends Cruz + Jacob have unveiled quite a controversial mini documentary this week focusing on party photography and the extent to which photographers can use the camera in their hand as a pass to festivals, green rooms, and DJ booths around the world. The massive boom of dance music in recent years has brought about a simultaneous boom in party photographers; many of whom know nothing about photography and find that taking pictures is the best way to attend events in VIP fashion. We’ve all seen them it’s nothing new. Cruz + Jacob dive deep into this issue in this extremely well done, honest video, interviewing some of the most well known photogs in the game including Rukes and Kirill. Check it out. √+

[STREAM] Major Lazer – Bubble Butt (DJ Snake Remix)

    Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

DJ Snake has been on a remixing tear lately, taking on Duck Sauce, AlunaGeorge, and as of this morning, Major Lazer. The Parisian producer has a very distinct style of bass, using elements of Hip Hop beats with bleepy Electronic leads, and Snake’s remix of Major Lazer’s “Bubble Butt” available for stream today is a prime example. “Coming soon” reads in the description on Soundcloud, so maybe we’ll be seeing an official “Bubble Butt” EP out soon?

If the handful of older, practically-buried tracks on YouTube are any indication, Sydney's the Preatures have spent the last few years pinging between mildly overbaked songwriting exercises and forgettable boy-girl rock duets. "Is This How You Feel?", the title track from their forthcoming EP (out August 9 via Univeral Australia), is a clear departure from their early material, showcasing a newfound dedication to rhythm and restraint.

FLEETWOOD MAC - THEN PLAY ON

There were 2 different versions of this LP, each with slightly different tracks. The CD contains all tracks from both versions. Led by singer-guitarist Peter Green, the first version of Fleetwood Mac was one of England's premier bands and possibly the greatest white blues band ever to emerge from the '60s blues revival.1969's Then Play On is their best album and Green's pinnacle achievement. Musicians include:  Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwin (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass); Mick Fleetwood (drums), and Christine Perfect (background vocals) Heavily influenced by Otis Rush, Green had an unusually lyrical style for a blues musician, able to draw on flamenco, folk, even classical guitar--all of which make an appearance in the ambitious instrumental coda to his major opus, "Oh Well." Despite the inclusion of superior modern blues songs like "Rattlesnake Shake" and "Show-Biz Blues," Fleetwood Mac's Then Play On is notable for its instrumentals. Standout tracks range from the dream-like voyages "My Dream" and "Underway" to virtuosic three-guitar jams like "Searching For Madge" and "Fighting For Madge," both of which feature Green's inspired guitar work. ~ CD Universe

WEDIDIT Releases Split EP + New Music Video

    Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

LA collective Wedidit (known perhaps best for their work with acts like Shlohmo, RL Grime, and visual artist Sus Boy) have just released a dual-sided EP from new artists to their roster: C.Z. and Arnold. “Das Why” is C.Z.’s track, what I happily am going to dub as “evil runway” thanks to a very amusing Soundcloud comment thread. Tamed horns, repetitive vocaling, squeaks and drips, and the tiniest tinge of 808 cowbell, “Das Why” is dark but still relatively charming, a novel combination that WEDIDIT has made its name in. The other half of the EP, Arthur’s “Plus and Minus” is much more atmospheric, with pitched-up melodic vocals, piano chords, and little additions of triplet-snares. Though the two tracks contain similar elements (cut-up repetitive vocals, toned-down base elements (horns, piano), and little sound trinkets) and thus work well together, they’re very aesthetically different.

THEE COOL CATS RELEASE TODAY ON NURVOUS RECORDS AND GET PHYSICAL MUSIC

    Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

A big day in the books for the young Mexicali duo Thee Cool Cats – Today marked the much anticipated release of their ‘Play It Again’ EP on NYC based Nurvous Records, along with their Beatport contest winning remix for Blond:ish & Climbers on Get Physical Music. With their initial exposure coming from the world traveling support of Amine Edge & DANCE, the single “Play It Again” was almost snatched up by Amine’s new label CUFF, only to be beat to the chase by Nurvous. The other tracks on the EP “Still Gone” and “Will Never Do” keep things on a more soulful level, executing solid B-sides in the deep/disco category. Check them all out below, and support our boys on Beatport!

Every label needs a strong summer release and we're pretty sure we found ours for this summer.

From the very first second we heard this demo from Stockholm based producer Claes Rosen (1/2 of dubstep duo L-Wiz) we knew this would be one of our fave releases on Local Talk. Seriously, its a real beauty! With a slight r&b touch, melodic chords and thumping house rhythms both tracks have that perfect contrast of soulful deepness and an uplifting feel.

James Brooks, the artist formerly known as Elite Gymnastics, now goes by Dead Girlfriends, an unsettlingly blunt but meaningful moniker inspired by the radical feminist Andrea Dworkin. On his Tumblr, Brooks cites a speech by Dworkin in which she says we should not measure the progress of women by where they're now visible, but rather by lowered counts of dead women, battered women, and raped women. "That explanation will probably make most people feel even more unpleasant than the name," Brooks wrote. "But that's how living in the patriarchy makes me feel every day."
"On Fraternity", from the debut EP by Dead Girlfriends, lives up to his promise to make "aggressively more feminine" music than Elite Gymnastics' mix of jungle, hip-hop, and video game samples. This is a song about why it is worth fighting fearlessly against a patriarchal world where women are second class citizens. The track moves from explosive moments to more solemn ones, propulsive electro-pop that maintains a connection to grating noise (remember that "Elite Gymnastics" was a Whitehouse reference). "On Fraternity" is an indictment of social irresponsiblity and a critique of hypocritical pockets of "punk" that allow it. It sounds ideal in 2013-- a white male artist with a direct feminist message that can speak freely with anyone, that will get under your skin if it's not already there in less poetic terms.
