Here’s a cut from the recently released Sound Pellegrino Compilation that we wanted to share with y’all. It’s by Eero Johannes, and has a kind of Glass-Swords-Rustie feel to it with the vocals and whatnot, but a lot more stripped back, with some excellently placed percussions and melodies to make your brain swim:

[FREE DOWNLOAD] YOU DON’T KNOW THOMAS JACK…

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Never underestimate the power of social networks. Amidst the heaps of garbage that cloud your inbox day to day, there is always a diamond in the rough. I luckily landed on one yesterday, receiving a message from a young Aussie producer by the name of Thomas Jack . My personal interest in live saxophone incorporated into house tracks is what lured me into the initial track he sent me “The Final Speech”, and it delivered 100%. Fusing deep house with funky soulful backbone, I was already on board. Digging into his soundcloud, the hits just kept on coming. I could go on, but I’d rather you just hear his own epic description below and then listening for yourself. WHAT A FIND.

Solid Steel Radio Show 28/6/2013 Part 3 + 4 - DJ Food

For the second hour this week DJ Food presents a version of his set from the Boards of Canada-inspired night he played recently, 'A Few Old Tunes'. The playlist for the night took its cues from the Scottish duo's music and expanded both ways, to the music and TV that had inspired them to those who had been inspired in return.

From the past we find Sesame Street, Galt MacDermont, Delia Derbyshire and John Abercrombie, from the present: The Books, Mordy Laye, Lost Idol and Two Quiet Suns. In addition to the audio mix, Kev presents his first solo AV mix - 'O Is For Orange'. Visually inspired by the weathered found footage cine film and public information films of yesteryear and featuring numerous unofficial Boards of Canada fan films that have sprung up on YouTube over the years.

Solid Steel Radio Show 28/6/2013 Part 1 + 2 - Congo Natty

Solid Steel (28th June) It's a massive welcome this week to Congo Natty, a well respected and legendary figure in British music who had his first release as Rebel MC in 1988, the same year Solid Steel started. Chart success followed alongside Double Trouble, but he's probably most respected as one of the pioneers of Jungle. His music has always been a firm fixture on Solid Steel, evident in the 1991 Kiss recording we had back in January. Will Ashon from Big Dada talks to him about his extensive career, his new album 'Jungle Revolution' and we get to hear a few classic records that have influenced him over the years. That is followed by a 'Congo Natty live 95' recording that features Ragga Twins, Navigator, MC Dett and DJ SL.

Really enjoying this at the moment, by Sinoia Caves aka Jeremy Schmidt, who was also responsible for the soundtrack to ‘Beyond The Black Rainbow’. Said film was flawed but visually and sonically gorgeous, due in no small part to Schmidt’s dark and terrifying electronic score.

This album is a lot lighter, much spacier and, with a couple of tracks over the 15 minute mark, much more of a cosmic trip. The 16 minute ‘Dwarf Reaching the Arch Wonder’ is the missing link between Tangerine Dream and Vangelis and wins title of the week by a mile.
I’m well behind on this as it was officially released in 2006 (after a self-release in 2002!). I can only hope that the constant fan rumblings for a proper release of the ‘…Black Rainbow’ soundtrack will be heard some day.

Marnie, Crystal World
A solo debut with atmosphere to burn

As a member of seductively austere quartet Ladytron, Helen Marnie has impressive electro-pop credentials. Her solo debut feels less strict, less pristine, as if all the wires and circuitry are slowly starting to melt down. Recorded in Iceland with Ladytron compadre Daniel Hunt, Crystal World doesn’t quite thaw all the ice around her voice, but there is an emotional heat to “We Are the Sea” and “Violet Affair” that softens the album around the edges. Natasha Khan’s dreamier extravagances are detectable on “Gold” and “The Wind Breezes On,” expansive electronic horizon-chasers that hint at existential crises. Best of all, however, are the moments where the drama becomes explicit: the increasingly ominous hush of “Laura,” or the space-Goldfrapp of “High Road,” sweet dreams cut with an dash of sour. It may still be touched by a synthesized chill, but Crystal World has atmosphere to burn.

Nine Inch Nails - Came Back Haunted

"Came Back Haunted", the new video from NINE INCH NAILS, can be seen below. The clip was directed by filmmaker David Lynch. The song comes off "Hesitation Marks", the first NIN album since 2008's "The Slip", which will arrive on September 3. The CD features guest appearances from FLEETWOOD MAC guitarist Lindsey Buckingham andTHE WHO touring bassist Pino Palladino.

NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor described "Hesitation Marks" as "much more electronic," although he added that the first single,"Came Back Haunted", is "familiar, it's very self-referential and purposely. I think that's the most like that there is on that record."

PREVIEW: Jaw Jam – No Sleep EP [SMBL021]

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

I spent a long eight years living in New Jersey, and to be honest I expected very little to come out of the Garden State as far as talented and forward-thinking dance artists were concerned. Only just this year, I’m starting to think I was wrong. Enter Jaw Jam, a NJ residing young producer. With intelligent synths and basslines, Jaw Jam has carved a clever little sound that fits well with the San Francisco label Symbols.

Daft Punk Art Show in LA Tonight!

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Well, this is neat. Tonight our friends at SF’s Gauntlet Gallery and The Well are presenting an unbelievable curation of art inspired by the robots known as Daft Punk . Based on the initial exhibit in San Francisco last month, we hear we’re in for an amazing experience in an homage to two of dance music’s timeless artists. GDD™ DJs aRod and Burn Unit will be providing the sounds for the evening, and I’m sure there will be some kind of booze flowin’ from 7:30PM to midnight. Hope to see you there for this unique event.

Last Japan has killed it the last year or so. Going from bedroom producer to Sony signing, his moody, sniping beats, like Ambush and Tactics, would get bumped in -thuh raves- by all top DJs, and he recently collaborated with Zomby on the nutter’s new album With Love. The Darsk EP continues in this night-time theme, with four quite different tracks, all dripping with influence from top places. Opener Paid In Full is a switched-on Grime track with Merky Ace on the mic, while Hoods is a demon-bass driven tune with touches of Claude Von Stroke. Every Time I fills the spot of the epic builder with sweet yet solemn vocals and closer Float is a hippocampus-thumper, sure to rattle club toilet piping for the rest of 2013. Get involved widdit:

Matias Aguayo, The Visitor

Thoroughly steeped in invigorating, choppy rhythms and chants
As half of Closer Musik and on his own, dance producer Matais Aguayo was always an odd duck of Kompakt Records — a label that’s hatched a few. Aguayo is Chilean, and South American rhythms and percussion have made their way increasingly into his recordings; in 2009 he founded the label Cómeme to explore the intersection of analog gear and Latin grooves. It’s not surprising that Aguayo’s decision to issue The Visitor on Cómeme (which Kompakt distributes) means that it’s his most thoroughly steeped in invigorating, choppy rhythms and chants, as well as his archetypal Berlin-bred minimalist psychedelia. “El Sucu Tucu” even nods to the queen of Latin crossover herself, Gloria Estefan, briefly quoting Miami Sound Machine’s “Conga” in the midst of a hard-popping samba groove. The album is stuffed with percussion, as was 2009′s Ay Ay Ay, but this album is less abstruse, friendlier and fully assured.

From "The Visitor", the new album from Matias Aguayo. Available June 24 on Cómeme.

BROWNSWOOD OFFICE CHART // JUNE 2013

Next week we’re all off to the Worldwide Festival in the South of France! Enjoy our selection for June. It’s been a while, we been sleeping.

So we thought we’d share with the good folk who come and see us through the medium of the interweb, our favourite tracks of the month.

It’s pretty straightforward – everybody in the office picks 2 tracks that they’re feeling that month – be it a power ballad, an irie stepper, a club banger, a guilty pleasure, a beat supreme… the list goes on. Anyway, I’ll let the music do the talking.

Visionquest take over Glastonbury for a Thursday night like you've never seen

Visionquest

The DJ collective promise a multi-hour extravaganza mixing music, immersive theatre and mind-melting strangeness

Just when you thought it was safe to go out into the mud … the forecast for tonight, traditionally the calm before the storm at Glastonbury, now promises a techno-tornado. Renowned four-headed DJ collective Visionquest have been granted an unprecedented seven-hour site takeover, which they've pledged to use to challenge the perceptions and dancing feet of Glastonbury's early birds. Don't be scared – the doubtlessly impeccably selected music will be a fluid and freewheeling mix of deep house, techno and dolphin noises. Not challenging in the Stockhausen Helicopter Quartet sense, but it's safe to say it would teach Disclosure a thing or two about both the history and future of dance music.

PREVIEW: STWO – Beyond EP [LFTF005]

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

I’m sitting here trying to think of the right word to use for a Blog / Label… Blabel? Lablog? Log? Either way you cut the potato, Live For The Funk has been bringing some really special original content to the world, most notably with their newly set up release front.

Up next from that spectrum is from the young Parisian man known as Stwo. I’ve been an absolute fan of young Parisian producers as of late, seems as though they’re fitting into the “French men know real romance” cliché, which when put into musical content is 100% happily lapped up by me. The Beyond EP contains five tracks, with a similar slowed and soulful vibe across each of them. Topped off with a fair amount of bright female vocals, the EP is highlighted (in my opinion) by the first track “Lovin U”, which hits you with a low-end that pierces right into your core.

The EP is available for download as of July 3 through the LFTF Soundcloud. In the mean time, you can preview snippits of each track on the stream below:

Best New Tracks - Pitchfork: Ellery James Roberts: "Kerou's Lament"

Best New Tracks - Pitchfork

Link to Best New Tracks - Pitchfork

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 06:58 AM PDT
Ellery James Roberts doesn't do small. His old band, Wu Lyf, was a brilliant flash in the pan that burned out brightly and quickly after its triumphant debut album, 2011's Go Tell Fire on the Mountain. Roberts announced his departure from that auspicious project with a letter that grandly stated, "WU LYF is dead to me," among a litany of weighted phrases. Now, there's his first solo song, "Kerou's Lament", which appeared online accompanied by a video interspersing footage of a young girl going through the motions of self-immolation with flashes of a poster which reads, "What does it mean to be free?"

Roberts has a knack for turning a quiet revelation into a widescreen spectacle. The London-based artist even borrows the blown-out beat from Clams Casino's soaring "I'm God" instrumental to bolster the sweeping synths, blaring horns, and guttural cries of his personal hymn, but "Kerou's Lament" takes off from lofty heights from the start, building layers of anthemic chords around the intensity of Roberts' gruffly tarnished voice as he chants with bleeding conviction, "To the powers of old, to the powers that be: You fucked up this world, but you won't fuck with me." With a message of that size, it only feels right that Roberts delivers it with the same grandiose emotions that have become synonymous with his body of work.
